For the first time as president, Donald Trump is celebrating his birthday in the White House. As the commander in chief turns 71, his critics on social media decided to give their thoughts.

Trump's birthday

Ever since Donald Trump announced his campaign for president back in June 2015, the entire game of American politics has been turned upside down. The former host of "The Apprentice" has dominated Washington with his questionable policy proposals and controversial rhetoric, resulting in even more of a partisan divide in the country. While Trump's candidacy was initially viewed as a joke and a potential attempt to generate higher rating on his reality show, he quickly picked up steam and eventually went on to win the GOP nomination.

Not long after and Trump pulled off one of the most shocking political upsets in recent history with his victory over Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton. In the months that have followed, Trump has faced increased pressure regarding a variety of issues, including, but not limited to, his policies, executive orders, controversial tweets, and the scandals related to Russia and his administration. On June 14, Trump celebrated his 71st birthday with well wishes coming from his family.

Ivanka Trump took to Twitter on Wednesday morning to wish her father a happy birthday, tweeting, "Happy Birthday to my incredible father @realDonaldTrump.

I hope that the year to come is your best yet!" "Happy birthday grandpa. We love you," Donald Jr. posted to his social media feed. "Happy Birthday dad! Can't wait to celebrate tonight!" Eric Trump tweeted. As of press time, First Lady Melania Trump has not posted a birthday message to her husband.

Twitter reacts

As the billionaire real estate mogul celebrated his birthday, social media critics didn't hold back their thoughts.

"June 14 is Donald Trump's 71st birthday! For the event every American must do something to make America great again. Easy for Trump: RESIGN!" author John Dean tweeted.

"(The president's) birthday is tomorrow.

Per Melania's contact, she has to touch it," one social media user wrote while attaching a GIF of Melania Trump looking upset. "Happy birthday to everyone born on June 14th except Donald Trump," another tweet read.

"Sad news today friends: my wife shares a birthday with Donald Trump. The upside is that it's also Boy George's birthday," an additional tweet noted.

"Happy birthday to (president), a man who said he could stand in the middle of 5th avenue, shoot people and still not lose voters," Elisabeth Jakovenko wrote. As the backlash continued, it was made more than obvious that many Americans are still not on the side of the president.
