While German police have not confirmed that this was a Terror Attack, a man drove his car into a group of pedestrians in Heidelberg, Germany, on Saturday and was shot by police. The incident happened near a bakery stand in a square in central Heidelberg, a city around 54 miles (88 km) south of Frankfurt, Germany.

Three pedestrians injured, one seriously

There were three pedestrians injured in the incident, one of them seriously, according to Mannheim police. Reportedly after he drove his vehicle into the group of people, the suspect attempted to flee the scene and was shot by police officers.

Police said in a statement that the suspect was seen getting out of the car holding a knife, and officers tracked him down to a swimming pool in the area with the aid of eyewitnesses. The suspect was injured seriously by the police and has been taken to hospital. So far, there is no known motive for the attack and the suspect has yet to be identified. Mannheim police are currently leading the investigation, as its police district has reportedly been merged with that held by Heidelberg.

As reported by CNN, the latest incident comes at a time when the people of Germany are still reeling after the deadly attack in a Berlin Christmas market. On December 19, 12 people were killed and 48 injured after a tractor-trailer drove into the crowded Christmas market.

The driver in that incident was named as Anis Amri and was later killed in a police shootout in Milan, Italy. In that case, Amri, failed Tunisian asylum-seeker, had pledged allegiance to ISIS and was seen in a video that had been posted to the ISIS-affiliated website Amaq.

No links to terrorism have been found

At the present time, German police have yet to connect the driver of the car in Heidelberg to terrorist sources.

Metro reports that a police spokesman, David Faulhaber, told Reuters that there are currently no indications of the driver having a terrorist background, adding that he could not currently comment on any possible motives for the attack.

The amateur video footage below shows the police as they find and shoot the driver of the vehicle.
