In August 2016, Lenovo-owned Motorola unveiled its Moto Z series of handsets. It has not even been a year and rumors are rife about a new device dubbed the Moto Z2 Play. On April 21, Technobuffalo got its hands on some leaked renders of the supposed smartphone which is touted to be the successor of the Moto Z Play device.
What can be gleaned from the press renders?
The Moto Z Play was marketed as a mid-range smartphone with average specs and not the premium features, which were available in the Moto Z and Moto Z Force handsets. The predecessor to the impending Moto Z2 Play sported a thicker design, which provided users with superior battery quality.
However, the leaked renders of the Moto Z2 Play show that Motorola has redesigned the smartphone.
Instead of featuring the thick look, the leaked renders reveal a sleeker device, which is as thin as the other Moto Z smartphones. However, the all-important headphone jack still seems to be present in the handset even after the reduction in its width. This will impress most fans who were hoping for a slightly thinner model this time around.
Fingerprint scanner
Apart from the noticeable size difference, another aspect which seems to have changed in the impending smartphone is the dimension of the fingerprint scanner. The Moto Z2 Play reveals a front-mounted fingerprint sensor much like the one present in its predecessor.
However, this time around, the company seems to have incorporated a wider sensor, much like the one it housed in the Moto G5 and Moto G5 Plus handsets. The company may also be planning to include the swiping gestures into its fingerprint sensors, to be used for software navigation.
The leaked renders show the device sporting a clock widget which has the date June 8.
This may indicate the launch date or even the date of its release, but for now, this is pure conjecture. Specs and features have not been revealed officially but, rumors are doing the rounds regarding what the smartphone may deploy regarding hardware and software.
Rumored specs of the Moto Z2 Play
The smartphone will likely sport a 5.5-inch FHD (1080p) display and will probably be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 652 chipset.
The battery will once again be a large one and will likely be one of the USP’s of the Moto Z2 Play, like its predecessor.
The device will also likely come with a single camera as Motorola may want to reserve the dual lens for its premium smartphones, like the Moto Z2 and Moto Z2 Force. RAM and storage specifications are not known either but may be the same as the Moto Z Play, i.e. 3 GB of RAM and 32 GB internal storage.
