So far, the 2020 XFL league has three head coaches established for the upcoming season. As of this coming week, fans will learn of another head coach. The XFL's Tampa Bay team is expected to make a big announcement in the coming days. The announcement may be one of the biggest yet, as it will involve a coach who worked in a head coaching capacity within the National Football League (NFL). That coach could also serve as general manager and help select players once the 2019 XFL Draft arrives later this year.
Tampa Bay coach reveal on Tuesday
A press conference has been set up for this coming Tuesday (March 5) in Tampa Bay, Florida.
During the press conference, it's expected that Marc Trestman will be announced as the head coach of the franchise. The team's general manager will also be revealed. If it's like previous XFL coaching announcements, Trestman will serve both roles for the yet to be named Tampa Bay XFL team.
Trestman will be the first coach revealed for the 2020 XFL with an NFL head coaching job on his resume. Trestman worked as head coach for the Chicago Bears during the 2013 and 2014 NFL seasons. It's mentioned that the 2013 team he coached was the second-best in terms of average points per game in the history of their franchise. The team averaged 27.8 points per game, which was slightly less than a point lower than the 1985 Bears team averaged (28.5 per game).
That was his only head coaching job within the NFL. He was also the offensive coordinator for the Baltimore Ravens during the 2015 and 2016 seasons. More recently, he worked as head coach in the Canadian Football League (CFL) for the Toronto Argonauts. He coached in the CFL from 2008 through 2012 for the Montreal Alouettes.
During his tenure, they captured back-to-back championships.
Half of XFL team coaches known
With the announcement of the 63-year-old Trestman as Tampa Bay's XFL head coach, it will give the reboot league half of its head coaches. The league initially announced that former Oklahoma Sooners coach Bob Stoops will be the coach and general manager of the Dallas franchise.
After that, former college assistant coach Pep Hamilton was announced as general manager and head coach for the Washington, DC team. Former NFL player Jim Zorn was announced as the head coach for the Seattle XFL franchise. That gave the league three coaches, and Trestman will be the fourth.
As mentioned, fans will officially learn the Tampa Bay head coach news during an XFL press conference this coming Tuesday. That will go live on XFL's social media and other platforms beginning at 11 AM ET. Now that the teams are getting coaches in place, it seems only a matter of time before they begin to scout players, and, ultimately create rosters for the football league before next February.
