The latest edition of the NCAA basketball AP Top 25 was released on Monday, January 21, and the Tennessee Volunteers are the new No. 1 team in the land. The Vols are rolling right now and playing solid defense, but many folks disagree with their No.1 ranking as Virginia and Michigan make their case.

Streak ends for Wolverines

According to a Freep report, the Michigan Wolverines had their eye on the No. 1 spot in the latest AP Poll. However, a loss to Wisconsin on Saturday afternoon prevented that. Nevertheless, the Wolverines are still as solid as they come in College Basketball as their loss only dropped them from No.

2 to No. 5.

The defeat was the Wolverines first this season, dropping them to 17-1, which percentage wise is still a better mark than the four teams ahead of them. While the Volunteers hold down the No. 1 spot, Duke is the current No. 2 team in the land followed by the Virginia Cavaliers, Gonzaga Bulldogs, and Michigan Wolverines.

With two losses, one coming against an unranked Syracuse team, it is hard to imagine the AP putting Duke at No. 2 ahead of Michigan and Gonzaga, but they did. The Blue Devils did hand UVA their first loss on the season, so perhaps that is why they are getting all the love this week.

Power Rankings

The Wolverines (17-1, 6-1 Big Ten) may have fallen three spots to No. 5 in this week's AP poll after a 10-point loss at Wisconsin on Saturday, however, they are still a solid No.

2 in the power rankings.

The Westgate sportsbook in Las Vegas still has their eye on Michigan as not only a force in the Big Ten but as a top favorite to take home the Men’s basketball title this season.

Currently, the Wolverines are listed at 7/1 to win the 2019 March Madness Tournament, which puts them only behind Duke (2/1) and Gonzaga (6/1). That, along with the Wolverines incredible run over the past 35 games is one of the main reasons they are still a strong No. 2 in the power ranks.
