Just three days away from the early signing period, the Nebraska football team is seeing quite a bit of action among its most prized targets. That includes Dru Mathis, who appears to be moving further away, not closer, to becoming a Cornhusker. Earlier this week, Mathis tweeted out that he had received an offer he had been waiting on for a while now. The UCLA Bruins were one team he had a lot of love for, but hadn't been getting much attention from.

The official offer from Chip Kelly and company has started what appears to be an avalanche of love from Mathis aimed at the California school.

Nebraska football in the rearview mirror?

There was a time when the Huskers appeared to be the team to beat for Dru Mathis. As other teams have continued to show him love, that appearance has faded. The Huskers, who are already in the Top 20 when it comes to recruiting rankiings have been spending quite a bit of time going after high profile defenders. That has included Mathis, who has been a standout JUCO player.

The real question now is can the Huskers make up the ground they seem to have lost.

247Sports believes the Baylor Bears are the team to beat. The Cornhuskers are actually not far behind them. UCLA oddly enough hasn't even cracked the top four. One has to wonder whether Mathis is really considering the Bruins or whether he is simply showing love to a team he had been waiting on for several months.

UCLA's standing with Dru Mathis is the wild card

Shortly after getting an offer from UCLA, the linebacker tweeted out pictures of him on the Bruins' campus wearing the gold and blue. Because recruiting experts don't seem to think UCLA is really in the mix, one has to wonder what the point of those tweets are. Is the linebacker really thinking about allowing a team that entered the fray so late to steal him away?

It should be pointed out that Mathis went to San Diego State out of high school before ending up at Moorpark College. He might have a special place in his heart for the region's schools, especially since he's a California native. He has spent the better part of this recruiting cycle looking like he didn't care if he had to travel a great distance away from home in order to continue his playing career. It's possible the great distance he was looking at traveling finally hit home. Nebraska football fans will likely be in the dark about Dru Mathis' intent right up until the early signing period starts on December 19.
