On Monday, the NBA announced the Eastern and Western Conference players of the week for the week of October 29-November 4. NBA.com has reported that in the East, guard Victor Oladipo of the Indiana Pacers received the weekly honors. Guard Russell Westbrook of the Oklahoma City Thunder was named the player of the week out West.
Oladipo and the Pacers participated in four games this past week, going 3-1 in the process. A first-time All-Star last season, Oladipo was the catalyst for their successful week.
Eastern Conference: Victor Oladipo
Playing 35.1 minutes per contest, this past week, the 26-year-old Oladipo averaged 23.5 points, 10.3 rebounds, 4.0 assists, 2.0 steals, and 0.5 blocks.
He shot 43 percent from the field (34-of-79), 29.4 percent on three-point tries (10-of-34), and was near-perfect from the foul line connecting on 94.1 percent (16-of-17). The 6-4 shooting guard ended the week strong, with a scoring/rebounding double-double in each of his last two games. He scored at least 21 points in all four games. Now, in his sixth season, this is the fourth time that Oladipo has received player of the week honors. Each of the prior three times came last season.
Western Conference: Russell Westbrook
After Oklahoma City started the season 0-4 (Westbrook missed the first two games with injury), the Thunder have gone on to win their ensuing four games. Three of those four outings came in the week of October 29-November 4.
Not only did Westbrook have a superb week, but he also has proved his value as a leader. Yahoo! reports how he met a struggling Terrance Ferguson at the gym, at midnight, after a loss, to help talk him through his shooting woes.
The 29-year-old Westbrook performed well in all three games that the Thunder went on to win by a combined 47 points.
The 2016-17 league MVP played an average of 32.2 minutes in the three games, with per game averages of 28.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, 10.0 assists, 3.3 steals, and 0.3 blocks. His impressive week saw him make 53.8 percent of his field goal attempts (35-of-65).
Westbrook scored at least 23 points in each of his last three games and secured double-doubles in points and assists in each of the last two.
Currently, in his 11th season, the seven-time All-Star has now been named Western Conference Player of the Week 18 times. One of the best point guards in the NBA received the honors twice last season and four times during his 2016-17 MVP season.
