The Nebraska football staff is looking towards the future in terms of building the program up to a successful level. Based on the way they closed out the NCAA football season, things are looking up. In addition, head coach Scott Frost and the rest of his staff are making recruiting visits to sign top prospects such as Ty Robinson. As they add to the talent, they also will lose a few players here or there, whether it be due to releases or transfers.

Redshirt freshman defender to transfer

On Friday, the 247 Sports website reported that outside linebacker Guy Thomas requested his release from the Nebraska Cornhuskers.

Reportedly, Thomas' request was granted so he will be moving on. The World-Herald confirmed via an NU spokesman that Thomas is officially transferring. Thomas told the media outlet via message, "It's not working out," when they asked why he decided to transfer. At this point, it's unknown where his next stop will be.

Thomas chose to sign with the Nebraska Cornhuskers several years ago over the Louisville Cardinals and Pittsburgh Panthers.

However, he didn't quite get into the Huskers system as expected. He spent time on special teams as safety JoJo Domann was moved to the outside linebacker position about halfway through the past season.

Thomas played in just four games this past season for the Nebraska Cornhuskers. The 6-foot-3, 230-pounder had four tackles in those games.

He had increased second half playing time against Bethune-Cookman and Michigan, but both of those games were blowouts.

There are lingering rumors that Thomas may have quit the team several weeks ahead of an official announcement being made. Thomas wasn't part of the team travel for the Iowa Hawkeyes game, so it's entirely possible this was already known for some time.

Again, those are merely rumors at this point, though.

Nebraska's 2017 class cut in half

The 2017 Nebraska Cornhuskers recruiting class included a total of 20 players, back then. Now it's down to just 10 players following the Guy Thomas transfer news. Two of those 10 players never officially enrolled at the school.

Other departures include QB Tristan Gebbia, receiver Keyshawn Johnson Jr., and receiver Tyjon Lindsey. Guy Thomas is also the fourth linebacker from that class to depart from the school. Previously, Avery Roberts, Willie Hampton, and Andrew Ward all made their departures.

With the latest news, it signals an area of concern as Nebraska football seems to sorely need to fill the outside linebacker position.

One has to think that the ongoing visits and staff discussions will include this area of need. The good news is that there are more commits and recruits on the way, some who are enjoying their visits and could provide a boost for the future.
