After looking at the best free agent on teams who did not make the playoffs, those that lost in the first round, those that lost in the Conference Semifinals, and those that lost in the Conference Finals, it is now time to look at the best free agent (and other notable ones) for the two teams that squared off in the NBA Finals.

The Golden State Warriors made light work of the Cleveland Cavaliers and swept them in four games.

The Warriors may have to do a lot of retooling with their bench in the offseason, while the Cavaliers’ future largely hinges on the decision of one player.

Both teams have one of the best players in the game with a player option. Both are expected to decline, but while one is fully expected to re-sign, nothing is clear with the other one.

(Ages listed are referring to age at the start of next season.)

Cleveland Cavaliers

  • LeBron James - Player option (Age: 33)

In what is a secret to no one, James will opt-out of his player option which is worth slightly over $35 million to become an unrestricted free agent.

He can change the landscape of the NBA in deciding which team he will play for next season.

The 15-year veteran is coming off a season in which he played all 82 regular season games for the first time. He put up career-bests in rebounding (8.6) and assist (9.1) averages while also averaging 27.5 points, 1.4 steals, and 0.9 blocks. James shot 54.2 percent from the field, 36.7 percent on three-point tries, and 73.1 percent from the free throw line.

James’ teams (Miami Heat and Cavaliers) have reached the NBA Finals in eight straight seasons.

  • Other notables

Jeff Green - Unrestricted (Age: 32) - Green played in 78 games (13 starts) in 23.4 minutes per outing during his first season with Cleveland. He posted per game averages of 10.8 points (on 47.7 percent shooting), 3.2 rebounds, and 1.3 assists.

He scored 19 points in their Game 7 win over the Boston Celtics in the Eastern Conference Finals.

Rodney Hood - Unrestricted (Age: 26) - Hood was acquired from the Utah Jazz via trade in early February. In 21 regular season games (11 starts) with Cleveland, he played 25.3 minutes per game with averages of 10.8 points, 2.6 rebounds, and 1.4 assists. He fell in and out of the postseason rotation once the Eastern Conference Finals began as he didn’t play in seven of their last 14 games.

Golden State Warriors

  • Kevin Durant - Player option (Age: 30)

Like James, it would be completely shocking if Durant opted in to his contract for next season. Unlike James, it is almost a foregone conclusion that Durant will stay with his current team, and he has already stated that he will.

Now an 11-year pro, Durant is coming off his second-straight NBA Finals MVP. He played 68 games in the regular season finishing with averages of 26.4 points, 6.8 rebounds, 5.4 assists, 0.7 steals, and 1.8 blocks. He ended with shooting percentages of 51.6 from the field, 41.9 from deep, and 88.9 from the charity stripe.

He scored 43 points in Game 3 of the NBA Finals and recorded a triple-double as Golden State completed the sweep in Game 4.

  • Other notables

Kevon Looney - Unrestricted (Age: 22) - The 30th overall pick in the 2015 NBA Draft, Looney did not have his fourth-year option picked up making him an unrestricted free agent. Playing about 13.8 minutes per outing in his 66 regular season games, he averaged 4.0 points (on 58 percent shooting from the field), 3.3 rebounds, and 0.8 blocks.

He started five playoff games while Andre Iguodala was out with injury.

Patrick McCaw - Restricted (Age: 23) - Recovering from a back injury sustained from a scary fall on March 31, McCaw participated very little in the Warriors’ playoff run. He was a solid part of the rotation during the regular season though averaging 16.9 minutes in 57 games (ten starts). He went on to average 4.0 points, 1.4 rebounds, and 1.4 assists.

JaVale McGee - Unrestricted (Age: 30) - McGee started 17 of his 65 appearances this past season for Golden State. In the regular season, he averaged 4.8 points, 2.6 rebounds, and 0.9 blocks in 9.5 minutes. He played a somewhat larger role in the playoffs including an average of 16.3 minutes in the last three games of the NBA Finals.

Zaza Pachulia - Unrestricted (Age: 34) - Pachulia was the team’s starting center for much of the regular season. In 69 games (57 starts), he ended with averages of 5.4 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 1.6 assists in 14.1 minutes. With less of a need for a traditional center in the playoffs, he only played in seven games for 26 total minutes.

David West - Unrestricted (Age: 38) - In all likelihood, West will either re-sign with the Warriors or retire. The 15-year veteran appeared in 73 games during the regular season and put up averages of 6.8 points (on 57.1 percent shooting), 3.3 rebounds, 1.9 assists, and 1.0 blocks in 13.7 minutes.

Nick Young - Unrestricted (Age: 33) - “Swaggy P” played in 80 games (eight starts) during his first season with the Warriors. In 17.4 minutes per contest, Young compiled averages of 7.3 points and 1.6 rebounds. He connected on 123 threes at a 37.7 percent rate.
