Fight fans are still calling for a rematch between Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor either inside the UFC Octagon or in a boxing ring. The two superstars faced each other in a dream boxing match last year, where Mayweather ran away with a dominating victory.

Fast forward to 2018; there are still talks about a possible rematch between Mayweather and McGregor. Both fighters have also given hints that they are willing to go against each other one more time. But will the second showdown between the two combat sports superstar happen?

McGregor’s camp thinks Mayweather will make the jump to MMA

John Kavanagh, Conor McGregor’s coach, strongly believes that there is a realistic chance the rematch will happen, but not in a boxing ring. Kavanagh said that Mayweather would likely decide to make the big jump to Mixed Martial Arts, similar to how McGregor entered Mayweather’s territory last year.

The veteran trainer admitted that he has doubts about the proposed MMA fight before. However, Mayweather recently teased fans with videos of him inside the Octagon. Kavanagh said that he has a gut feeling the then-impossible fight will eventually become a reality.

“I was as doubtful as anybody and actually went as far as to stupidly tweeted that I would do the Irish Riverdance naked if Floyd steps in the Octagon,” Kavanagh told The Mac Life.

“Now I’m going, to be honest, I’m practicing Irish dancing, and I’m getting nervous about that.”

Boxer Amir Khan thinks otherwise

While Kavanagh is quite convinced that the MMA showdown between McGregor and Mayweather will happen, Amir Khan thinks otherwise. The former world champion said that Mayweather knows that making a jump to mixed martial arts from boxing will be very hard because it is a totally different sport.

Khan is aware that several boxers, including Manny Pacquiao, has signified interest in moving to MMA. He said that he could not envision a boxer having success inside the Octagon because it requires different tools and techniques compared to boxing.

“I just don’t think a boxer is just gonna have all the tools to fight someone in an MMA cage; it’s gonna be really difficult,” Khan said.

“I’ve been seeing Mayweather talking about and taking a lot of videos and pictures inside the MMA cage, but I just can’t see that ever happening.”

It remains to be seen, though, whether or not Mayweather will be adventurous enough to face McGregor on his home turf. Fans are arguing that it might happen because almost no one thought the boxing match between the two fighters would happen until McGregor and Mayweather signed the deal for the dream encounter.
