The Miami Heat just made another move right before the 2016-17 NBA season kicks off. The Heat have signed their 20th player to the roster for the new season and that last signee is a veteran swingman in Deandre Liggins. This is the second time that Liggins has signed with Miami, as he also signed two 10-day contracts back in 2014.
DeAndre Liggins in 2017-18
Miami Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra told the Miami Herald that he has a strong familiarity with DeAndre Liggins and said that it was "good to bring him back."
According to ESPN, DeAndre Liggins will probably start out the season playing for Sioux Falls, the Miami Heat G-League team.
This was also where he played in 2014 as well as in 2015-16 NBA season. It was during the 2016 G-League that Wiggins proved his value.
Liggins was a huge part of the Skyforce team in 2016 as he led them to the NBA G-League Championship. He started in 33 of 34 games and averaged 13 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 2.06 steals while playing for 38.4 minutes a game. He also shot 43.4 percent from 3-point land.
Last season, Liggins spent time with both the Dallas Mavericks and the Cleveland Cavaliers. He ended up averaging 2.5 points, and 1,7 rebounds, playing 12.5 minutes over 62 total games. He started 19 games last season between the two teams.
Liggins NBA pedigree
DeAndre Liggins entered the NBA in the 2011 draft when the Orlando Magic chose him with the 53rd overall pick that season. He played for the Magic, Oklahoma City Thunder, Miami Heat, Cleveland Cavaliers and Dallas Mavericks over his career and was part of the Thunder's 2013 NBA Playoff run.
While Liggins started 19 games in 61 appearances for the Cavaliers last season, the Cavs waived him in April. After only playing one game for the Mavericks, the former Kentucky Wildcats superstar had trouble finding a new home this offseason.
The Dallas Mavericks traded DeAndre to the Houston Rockets for cash in June and then the Rockets sent him to the Los Angeles Clippers in the Chris Paul trade.
In September, the Clippers decided to trade him to the Atlanta Hawks, who then immediately waived him hours after making the trade.
DeAndre Liggins ended up unemployed for two weeks before he reached the deal to return to the Miami Heat once again. However, unlike last season, Liggins will once again move back to the G-League for Miami, as the Heat are locked into their 15-man roster for the start of the 2017-18 NBA season.
