Sunday's Chicago Bears vs. Pittsburgh Steelers game seemed to have a bit of everything. The excitement factor was certainly there as fans in attendance at Soldier Field witnessed a spectacle. While the Chicago Bears looked like they might grab a huge lead heading into halftime, that wasn't the case based on a crazy turn of events. There was also the fact that this game required overtime to finally decide a winner.
That winner was the Chicago Bears in a 23-17 thriller. Here's the latest game recap with top performers, highlights, and what's up next for the teams.
NFL game recap
The Chicago Bears jumped to a 7-0 lead in the first quarter thanks to a Jordan Howard three-yard touchdown. However, Ben Roethlisberger and the Steelers tied things up in the second after an Antonio Brown seven-yard touchdown catch. Chicago scored again with a short pass from Mike Glennon to Adam Shaheen to make it 14-7. That score held up towards the end of the quarter, but that's when things became interesting.
The Pittsburgh Steelers had a 35-yard-field goal blocked with six seconds remaining in the second quarter.
Chicago's Cooper ran it back nearly all the way for a touchdown. However, when it looked like he was close to crossing the plane he slowed down ahead of it to walk the ball towards the end zone. Cooper didn't realize that Steelers defender V McDonald was right behind him and slapped the ball out of his hands at the one-yard line.
Holder J Berry slapped the ball out of the end zone, which ultimately resulted in the Bears getting a final play to end the half. They were penalized for a false start and opted for a field goal instead of attempting the touchdown. That made it 17-7 in favor of the Bears to end the half.
The Steelers managed to shutout Chicago in the second half and put a touchdown and a field-goal on the scoreboard.
A second with under 30 seconds to go by Chicago allowed the clock to run out and overtime was played. In that extra session, it originally looked like rookie Tarik Cohen scored the game-winning rushing TD. However, a review overturned it saying he stepped out of bounds at the 38-yard line. Several plays later, fellow running back Jordan Howard was able to rush in the game winner, sending the Chicago fans home happy.
The Bears finished today's game with 220 total yards of rushing offense. Jordan Howard tallied 138 yards and two touchdowns on 23 carries, while Cohen had 12 carries for 78 yards. Chicago's receiving only had 101 yards with Glennon tossing one touchdown and getting sacked twice as well as picked off once.
Roethlisberger ended up with 235 yards and a touchdown pass on 22-for-39 passing, with Le'Veon Bell adding 61 yards and a touchdown on the ground. Pittsburgh's receivers were led by Antonio Brown with 110 yards and the TD on 10 receptions.
