With current WWE "SmackDown" Women's Champion Naomi sitting in on guest commentary, the Women's No. 1 contender match took place at Sunday's "Battleground" PPV. Competing in the Fiveway Elimination match were Charlotte Flair, Becky Lynch, Natalya, Tamina, and Lana. Which of the five women's superstars would end up as the new top contender to challenge for the title at the "SummerSlam 2017" PPV? Here's the latest "Battleground" match recap and results.
Match recap
It was obvious from the beginning of this match that the alliance of Lana and Tamina would play into things.
The two would team up to take it to various competitors, with Charlotte Flair among the recipients of their attacks. Lana barked out requests as Tamina continued to unload on the "Queen."
Eventually, Becky Lynch managed to get involved and battled with Lana. She had her set up in the Disarmer, but Tamina made a save. Moments later, Tamina intervened again to save Lana from the submission hold. With Lana recovering, Becky slipped out of Tamina's grasp and put her into the Disarmer. Eventually, Tamina tapped out, giving the first elimination to Becky. Lana tried to go at Becky but quickly got put down as well. With the Disarmer locked in and no Tamina around, Lana had to tap out.
Natalya quickly rushed into the ring and rolled up Becky Lynch.
To help her efforts, she also yanked on Becky's shorts to secure the pinfall. After a three count, the "Irish Lass Kicker" was the third elimination of the match, leaving Charlotte Flair and Natalya.
The two would put up quite the fight against one another, trading various moves. Charlotte gained control and had Natalya down on the mat.
She went for the Reverse Moonsault. However, Nattie wisely put up both knees to block it, causing Charlotte to hit her midsection against knees. Moments later, Natalya grabbed Natalya for a pinfall, only to slam her head-first against the bottom turnbuckle. She would pull Charlotte to the center of the ring and collect the pinfall for the big win.
What's next?
The win makes Natalya the new No. 1 contender for the WWE "SmackDown" Women's Championship. She'll take on current champion Naomi in a match at the 2017 edition of "SummerSlam" in Brooklyn, New York in August.
After she won the Fiveway Elimination match at "Battleground" 2017, Natalya stood in the ring to admire her win over Charlotte. Naomi left the commentary spot to come into the ring and offer the new contender a handshake as a form of respect. Natalya looked at Naomi's outstretched arm for several moments and then exited the ring without reciprocating. Naomi simply smirked, realizing that she'll have a fight on her hands at "SummerSlam."
Of note, there were no appearances made by "Ms. Money in the Bank" Carmella, which could end up coming into play when "SummerSlam" arrives next month.
