The ATP professional circuit is in a rough spot. Wimbledon is getting closer to a conclusion with Roger Federer making headlines, but the future weeks or months could see Rafael Nadal getting in front of the herd. Despite being eliminated in the fourth round at Wimbledon, the Spaniard will likely capture the No. 1 seed in the near future. Even if Roger Federer wins Wimbledon, he will have to climb up even more in order to reach the summit.
The Swiss player will probably try to make his move around US Open. Nadal could benefit from Andy Murray being out due to a hip injury. Moreover, the current world no. 2 Novak Djokovic is also in some troubles struggling with that elbow injury.
Nadal has a small harvest to defend from last year
Back in 2016, Rafael Nadal was forced to withdraw from the French Open due to a wrist injury. He later skipped Wimbledon Championships due to the same reason. He went on resuming ATP schedule at Cincinnati at Western & Southern Open. That Masters 1000 event saw Nadal losing to Borna Coric in the round of 16.
His next stop was at the 2016 US Open as the fourth seed. He reached the fourth round where he surprisingly lost to Lucas Pouille, the young tennis hope from France. Nadal ended last year during the Asian leg of the hardcourt session. Making two appearances in Beijing and Shanghai he encountered little success. His lack of lustre of this segment of the year is now propelling him to the top. It won't be easy as Roger Federer is in full thrust again, The Swiss star is in the semis of Wimbledon and is likely to win it for t the e eighth time. A Federer off the chart would've put Nadal clearly in front of the herd.
Roger Federer sneaks in
The 35-year-old tennis legend is still relevant on the ATP World Tour.
A tremendous run earlier this year saw him prevailing at another Australian Open, Indian Wells, Miami and most recently Halle. Now, Wimbledon Championships seems to slip into his pocket once more. Federer poses as the great threat for Nadal over the next few months. In 2017, they have gathered three pieces of shares history with Federer winning them all. After all his recent progress, Nadal might wanna test Federer again on a hard court. What was a distant fantasy at the end of the season is now the fact-checked reality. Federer and Nadal are in control of men's tennis and it seems they will be making the headlines next.
Having nothing to defend over the next months, Federer will do the same as Nadal, they will only accumulate ranking points and hopefully ATP titles.
