Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr forgot to acknowledge superstar Steph Curry during his speech after their championship parade. After he finished his speech, Kerr sat down with wife Margot, who told him that he failed to mention Curry as he addressed the crowd. Initially, Kerr denied his wife’s assertion but Margot insisted that he forgot. Then, Kerr stood up, walked over to Curry, and apologized.
According to Mercury News, Kerr told Curry that he was “very embarrassed about what happened.” “It was just a stupid oversight. Not on my game,” Kerr said. “My wife said, ‘You’re the guy who forgot to thank his spouse at the Academy Awards.’” Kerr again apologized to Curry, whom he described as the “person most responsible for what we’ve built” with the Warriors. However, it was not over for Kerr, as he was called out by Curry fans on social media for his blunder.
Curry set to sign maximum contract with Warriors
Curry will become a free agent in the summer after his four-year, $44 million deal that paid him $12.1 million this season.
However, he is expected to remain with the Warriors and sign a super max five-year contract with a value of $205 million and a starting salary of $35.4 million next season. Curry’s expected deal will surpass the current record of the five-year, $153 million deal signed by Mike Conley with the Memphis Grizzlies.
Warriors want to keep Curry happy
Earlier, Warriors team owner Joe Lacob commented that the team will do whatever it takes to keep Curry. “He wants to be here and we want him here. So, I do not anticipate any issues with him staying,” Jacob said. Aside from Curry, the Warriors will also try to keep Kevin Durant next season. Durant joined the Warriors last season on a two-year deal worth $54.3 million but it was essentially a one-year deal with a player’s option for next season.
Durant can earn up to $35.35 million next season if he asks for a max salary. However, Durant pointed out that he would take less money next season to allow the Warriors to keep some of their key players, including Andre Iguodala and Shaun Livingston.
According to Spotrac, Durant has earned around $132 million in his first 10 years in the NBA. He played his first nine NBA seasons with the Oklahoma City Thunder before moving to the Warriors last season. It will be an interesting summer for the Golden State Warriors. That said, if they do decide that they want to keep their team intact and pursue more titles, they certainly have the option of doing just that.
