Clay-court expert 31-year-old Spanish tennis player Rafael Nadal defeated Swiss tennis player 32-year-old Stan Wawrinka by 6-2 6-3 6-1 to win the french open" for a record tenth time.
Nadal first played the French Open tournament also knows as "Roland Garros" in 2005 and since then has only lost two matches. Nadal is just short of winning one more game at the French Open to claim a record of winning eleven titles at the single grand slam, a record which is currently held by Margaret Court.
Nadal vs Wawrinka: Details about the final match
The final game lasted for two hours and five minutes and Nadal who has recently struggled in the fitness arena emerged victorious towards the end. His opponent and the runner-up for the game Wawrinka praised the Spanish star and sad "For sure he's playing the best he's ever played," adding "that's clearly the best he ever played. That's why he's winning so much again."
In total the Spanish star, who is known as one of the greatest clay-court tennis players, has won 15 grand slam titles. He is also one of the only two players in the history (the other one being Mats Wilander) who has won at least two Grand Slam titles on three different surfaces (hard court, grass, and clay).
Nadal's opponent in the game Stan Wawrinka has won three Grand Slam titles in total (Australian open in 2014, French Open in 2015 and US Open in 2016).
In his speech after his tremendous victory, Rafael Nadal said"It's truly incredible," he further added "In this final, to win the Decima is very, very special. I'm really emotional."
Rafael Nadal also went on to say that his feelings while he plays on "this court" can not be compared to any other "feeling". The 31-year-old star said "It's the most important event in my career without a doubt."
Nadal's Coach stepping down
Nadal's current coach 56-year-old Toni Nadal who is also his uncle also joined the trophy ceremony at the Philippe Chatrier Court to give the tennis star a trophy which celebrated Nadal's ten titles.
His coach, who has been with him since his childhood, would not be joining him from next year as he is stepping down to pay attention to the Clay-King's tennis academy in Majorca, Spain.
Nadal's defeat in the Australian Open
Rafael did not have the most ideal start this year as he lost the chance to win his fifteenth grand slam title in the Australian Open final to longtime rival Swiss tennis star Roger Federer, who also defeated him in the French Open back in 2009. Nadal last won the French Open in 2014 while playing against Serbian Novak Djokovic.
