Today fight fans are that much closer to what has already been called "The Fight of the Century." After months of suggestions, innuendos, and all out declarations of war, the first half of the Conor McGregor-Floyd Mayweather contract has been signed and fans everywhere are a step closer to seeing the fight everyone has been talking about for months.
Putting together the MacGregor-Mayweather fight
Dana White, the President of the UFC, has devoted countless hours to chasing this fight. Promoters, such as White, find that putting together a fight, whether it is in the realm of boxing or mixed martial arts, can be a daunting pursuit in the best of circumstances.
However, to attempt to cross disciplines and create a super fight of such epic proportions is truly a Herculean task.
The promotions, marketing, and financial aspects of the fight were just some of the details that would require discussion before either side would even consider signing the contract, much less setting the date and closing the deal. There is always a tremendous amount of detail involved in putting the pieces of the puzzle together, even more so when this much money is involved.
It has been whispered that Mayweather alone is expected to ask for $100 million dollars. The payday on this fight is part of the reason both sides are willing to make it happen, as well as part of the hold up as each side wants to be sure to get their share of the purse.
Rumors about the fight have been circulating for quite a while, with both McGregor and Mayweather talking up the event like only they could do. Their big personalities have kept the fight in the headlines even when big fight cards have been drawing pay per views in other fighting disciplines. Mayweather, despite being in retirement, has continually fired shots at McGrego,r who has been more than willing to return fire and challenge the boxer to a fight that will go down in history.
The Next Step for the McGregor-Mayweather fight.
Now that Conor McGregor has signed his part of the contract the ball is in Mayweather's court. White has expressed optimism that if he can get Mayweather and promoter Al Haymon to come to the table and enter a discussion on the terms of the fight, that there will be a fight.
White also cautioned that right now nothing is set in stone but he is hoping it will be solidified soon.
On the flip side of that, Mayweather has stated he has a team waiting to hear from White and McGregor and as soon as they communicate with him the fight will be confirmed. If each side holds true to their word then hopefully within the next year the fight that has been so long in the making will come to fruition and the two champs can fight it out.
If the promoters can, in fact, pull off putting the McGregor-Mayweather fight together it is sure to cause spectaclation unlike any fight ever seen. The battle of two such tremendous talents in an era where news reaches around the world in a matter of moments is sure to create a fight that fans can't begin to imagine and won't soon forget.
