According to NFL.com, the Buffalo Bills have parted ways with their 2014 second-round pick Cyrus Kouandjio. While Kounandjio has not put up brilliant numbers for the Bills, he has been an average offensive tackle for the team. With the tackle’s swift departure, fans and sports people are wondering if the former Bill was cut due to a strange incident that happened last month.
Elma incident sparked concern
In April of this past year, a local Elma resident called police after Kouandjio was spotted half naked in a field and acting in a bizarre manner.
The player was supposed to be at a Bills’ practice. However, Kouandjio had climbed over an electric fence, his car still sitting on the nearby highway. An accident had occurred on the adjacent highway, but there was no evidence that Kouandjio had been involved in the crash. When police tried to get close to the athlete, he shouted at them to shoot him. The player was transported to a hospital so doctors could evaluate him. The bizarre incident left people wondering about Kouandjio’s mental health and ability to play in the NFL. While it is also possible that the event could have been drug related, no further details have been released.
Originally from Cameroon, Kouandjio and his brother just became United States citizens a few months ago.
Citizenship is something that has always been his dream. Now, Kouandjio is a free agent searching for a new NFL team. His 6 ft. 7 size is an advantage that can be an asset to another team.
Dion Dawkins set to start
The Bills’ recent drafting and signing of offensive tackle Dion Dawkins seems to have inspired enough confidence with the team to make up for the Kouandjio release.
Dawkins demonstrated exemplary playing ability at the Senior Bowl. He was pegged as the best offensive lineman. Buffalo also has Richie Incognito and Cordy Glenn on their offensive line, which was a major reason why the Bills have been number one in rushing for the last two years. Buffalo’s quarterback Tyrod Taylor was sacked 42 times in 2016, which shows some offensive holes that still need to be filled.
At 6 ft. 4 and over 300 pounds, Dawkins has the physical size to be a star athlete.
Will the New England Patriots pounce on the Kouandjio release and offer him a contract? The Patriots already have Mike Gillislee, Stephon Gilmore, and Chris Hogan. Another pass protector for Tom Brady would be no surprise. It will be interesting to see where he may land.
