Former teammates Diana Taurasi and Penny Taylor were officially married just as the 2017 WNBA season opened. The two players were both a part of the Phoenix Mercury's championship teams with Taurasi still appearing as part of the latest roster.
Taylor has moved on to another role, and the two reportedly kept their relationship quiet so there wouldn't be any issues off the court in terms of media attention.
Here's the latest on these two women's basketball stars who are now officially together as wives.
Mercury teammates
Taurasi, age 34, was drafted by the Phoenix Mercury back in the 2004 season and is still a member of the squad today. She and Penny Taylor spent 10 seasons as teammates. Taylor, who is now 35-years-old, started with the league in 2001 as part of the new defunct Cleveland Rockers franchise. She played there for three seasons before arriving over to Phoenix in 2004.
For her resume, Taurasi is a seven-time WNBA All-Star and a four-time Olympic gold medalist, in addition to a collegiate champion in women's basketball at UCONN.
Penny Taylor won two Olympic silver medals with the Australian women's team, was a three-time WNBA All-Star, and an All-WNBA First Team selection in 2007.
While Taurasi and Taylor were on the Mercury team, Phoenix went on to capture the WNBA Championship for the 2007, 2009, and 2014 seasons. Taylor retired as of last year but still works with the Mercury as director of player development. As of Saturday, she and Taurasi officially became married.
Penny Taylor was previously married to Brazilian beach volleyball player Rodrigo Gil in 2005 for three years, but the two divorced. As for Taurasi, the former University of Connecticut women's star has never been married until now.
She described the wedding day as one of the "happiest days we've ever had."
Mercury's latest season
Diana Taurasi and her current Phoenix Mercury team suffered a disappointing loss in their home opener this past weekend. The team dropped their game 68-58 to the visiting Dallas Wings. Taurasi finished with just three points on 1-for-11 shooting in the losing effort while teammate Brittney Griner had 18 points.
The Mercury get a chance to bounce back from the loss when they host the Indiana Fever on Wednesday night at their home arena at Talking Stick Resort. As of this report, Phoenix is a 10 to 1 favorite to win the WNBA Finals, which has them tied for fourth overall with the Seattle Storm on the future odds list at Vegas Insider.
