The movie, "Avengers: Endgame" has rewritten the record books with an astounding first-weekend ticket sales at an estimated $350 million in the domestic market and $1.2 billion globally. Obviously, the universe belongs to Marvel and it proves that sci-fi-superhero Movies will probably never fail at the box office. The forecast was $260 million and $300 million in U.S. and Canadian theaters. However, it crossed the earnings of "Avengers: Infinity War" and "Star Wars: The Force Awakens." It opened in a total of 4,662 theaters in the United States and Canada and got rich dividends.

New Zealand Herald says "Avengers: Endgame” has already overtaken the gross earnings of "Skyfall," ''Aquaman," and "The Dark Knight Rises." Alan Horn, Disney chairman, has given full credit for the success to Marvel Studios and its president, Kevin Feige. The chairman said, “this success is a testament to the world they've envisioned, the talent involved, and their collective passion” He also mentioned the enthusiasm of fans all over the world.

The story in brief

It is the perennial storyline of good versus evil set in the future and it holds the attention of the viewers.

It takes off from where “Avengers: Infinity War” ends. Tony Stark, one of the Avengers is adrift in space, he has no food or water and sends a message to Pepper Potts about the crisis. In the meantime, the remaining Avengers have to evolve a strategy to bring back their vanquished allies and head for a final showdown with Thanos, the evil one who destroyed the planet and the universe.

New Zealand Herald goes on to add that positive reviews helped the fortunes of "Avengers: Endgame.Rotten Tomatoes gave it a rating of 96 percent, which was the best for any Marvel movie aside from "Black Panther." Disney is now the proud holder of all the top box-office openings except "Jurassic World" which was an offering by Universal.

It now remains to be seen whether the latest Avengers movie can pose a challenge to the top three worldwide grossers: "The Force Awakens," "Titanic” and "Avatar."

According to BBC, this movie is the 22nd offering in the Marvel Studios superhero franchise and it brought in $350m in only the US. It stars Robert Downey Jr as Iron Man, and it drew huge audiences in China. It became the fastest film ever to break the $1bn barrier, doing it in just five days. The popular Avengers franchise took off in 2008 with "Iron Man" and it has created a fan following of its own who keep waiting for more adventures into the world of fantasy. The audience wants to see movies that can whisk them away into another dimension where there are still the Davids who continue to fight the Goliaths.
