Last season the CW hit, "Riverdale," took on the iconic film, “Carrie,” for a musical episode which ended with an unforgettable moment. The episode took the group out of the season's big mystery surrounding the Black Hood's identity instead finding them with a different kind of drama and some musical levity before throwing them directly back into the deadly drama that always seems to find Archie and his friends. Executive Producer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa teased the show would once again have a musical episode which has been revealed to be the teen film "The Heathers."
The CW delivers the news through a school themed poster which includes a complete cast list: Cheryl, Betty, and Veronica will play the Heathers (with Cheryl as the lead Heather), with Josie and Sweet Pea as Veronica and JD, Archie and Reggie as Kurt and Ram, Evelyn Evernever as Ms.
Fleming, Toni as Betty Finn, Fangs and new character Peaches 'n Cream as various other characters. Peaches 'n Cream is portrayed by Bernadette Beck and is reported to be making an appearance in the episode “Chapter Forty-Seven: Bizarrodale.” The character is reported to be sticking around for at least three other episodes: “Chapter Forty-Nine: Fire Walk with Me,” “Chapter Fifty: American Dreams,” and the musical which is titled “Chapter Fifty-One: Big Fun.”
The poster provides a few other teases for the episode such as the whole production being sponsored by the mysterious Farm who will also be giving a pizza party. The Farm has been a mystery nearly as big as the Gargoyle King's identity, having gone unseen so far this season with even the leader Edgar Evernever has yet to make an appearance, with Betty even narrowly missing him.
Despite being unseen, the Farm has slowly made its presence known throughout the high school through Evelyn who even runs a club. Once again, Jughead won't be singing on stage but acting as head of security while Kevin will be the Director and portraying Peter Dawson who the poster describes as a forgotten character. EP Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa teases to EW, this time everyone will be singing which seems to be hinting at the possibility of Jughead singing, who fans know took no part in the actual musical last season when actor Cole Sprouse opted out of singing.
Upcoming 'Bizarrodale' and noir episodes
The highly anticipated episode “Bizarrodale” will finally air on February 6. EP Aguirre-Sacasa teases to the Wrap the episode will flip the Four Core characters of the show from Betty, Archie, Veronica, and Jughead to Cheryl, Kevin, Reggie, and Josie. The EP describes the episode as being really fun.
The CW reveals in the synopsis for the episode that wedding planning is in store for Sierra (Robin Givens) and Tom (Martin Cummins) who receive a message which prompts a reunion between the Midnight Club. To fix a mess they started, Reggie (Charles Melton) and Veronica (Camila Mendes) will have to take drastic measures. Elsewhere in the hour, Cheryl (Madelaine Petsch) receives some news about her choice college while Kevin and Moose's relationship could take a turn when Kevin (Casey Cott) gives him an ultimatum.
“Riverdale” season 3 is described as being inspired by "The Stepford Wives" & "True Detective" will also be featuring a noir-themed episode, which Aguirre-Sacasa shares with the Wrap, is entirely noir from the writing and plot to the way the episode is shot with certain parts filmed in black and white.
No word yet on any plans for a “Sabrina” and “Riverdale” crossover, but the EP is working on incorporating an Easter egg into “Riverdale” which he shares he's still working on getting the permission to do so. Though, the EP is in hopes to have conversations about a crossover after part two of “Sabrina” is wrapped up.
Kelly Ripa arrives in Riverdale
Before “Bizarrodale” and the Heathers musical fans have next week's episode “Chapter Forty-Five: The Stranger” to look forward to. The episode seems to find Alice (Madchen Amick) and F.P. (Skeet Ulrich) working to get their children to step back into high school life and getting away from the battle against Hiram Lodge. The synopsis reveals an Alice and F.P team up as they attempt to get Betty and Jughead to quit their search into the G&G game and instead put their efforts into SAT prep.
This leads to Alice going too far with her actions which forces Betty (Lili Reinhart) into a confrontation with her past. It's assumed the person she'll be confronting is her dad Hal aka the Black Hood who fans caught a glimpse of in the promo for the second half of the season. Elsewhere, Jughead (Cole Sprouse) makes a bold decision in his actions against the Gargoyle Gang. The episode airs on January 23.
The CW also released a synopsis for the following episode “Chapter Forty-Six: The Red Dahlia” which features Kelly Ripa as Hiram's mistress. The synopsis describes one of their own being attacked which leads the group to investigate. Elsewhere in Riverdale, a series of deaths brings Betty to team up with a surprising ally to investigate.
The episode also finds a spiraling Archie (KJ Apa) setting out on a new path while Jughead confronts Ms. Mulwray (Ripa). The synopsis shall leave fans breathing easier, over Archie's fate, after Wednesday's stunning cliffhanger. Somehow, Archie is expected to make it back to Riverdale after his continuous foray into survival mode while in prison, against Hiram's attacks, and even against a bear in the woods. The episode airs on January 30.
