I had a less than remarkable coming of age experience in high school. This show appeals to myself and anyone else who shared that experience. Netflix just might have created the perfect show to remind us how uncomfortable the teenage years can be. For many, it was filled with a painful series of fumbles, as we made our way into adulthood. Netflix's new series “Sex Education” gets its official global launch in January. The premiere season is set to feature eight one-hour episodes and feature characters who may remind you of your younger self. The teenage angst-ridden characters will remind you of what it means to find love, create friendships, and develop your opinions on sex.

I also want to share that "The Umbrella Academy" is premiering soon.

Synopsis but no spoilers

Though the series was filmed in Wales, UK, it is set in the fictional English town of Moordale. This is where we meet Otis Milburn (Asa Butterfield from "Ender's Game" and "Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children"), who is the epitome of the coming of age struggle. He is a socially awkward and seemingly naive high schooler, who bears the burden of having parents who are sex therapists. His home life is littered with videos and literature. It also involves torturous and uncomfortable conversations about the birds and the bees. These are delivered via his charming, yet unfiltered mom. I want to also share that Hollywood's obsession with space has continued.

Once his private life becomes public knowledge, at school, Otis quickly teams up with quick-witted and street-smart Maeve (Emma Mackey from "Summit"). Maeve comes up with the idea that they should set up an underground sex therapy clinic to help their fellow students figure out and deal with their problems. While one might assume that his mom’s honesty about sex should have made Otis a bit of amateur expert, it doesn't seem to be the case.

Through the conversations at the clinic with his fellow high schoolers, he realizes that he too may have some issues that need to be worked out. The most obvious problem of all, is that Otis has never had a sexual experience.

Additional cast

The series also stars award-winning actress Gillian Anderson ("The X-Files," "Hannibal," and "The Last King of Scotland") as Jean Milburn, his mother.

Ncuti Gatwa plays Eric, Otis’ best friend. The show also features Aimee-Lou Wood (Aimee Gibbs), Kedar Williams-Stirling (Jackson Monroe), and Connor Swindells (Adam Groff), who are classmates of Otis, Maeve, and Eric.

Get ready to grab your popcorn, because "Sex Education" will be available for binge-watching on Netflix starting on January 11.
