Ever since Disney fired former "Guardians of the Galaxy" writer/director James Gunn for controversial tweets he made, it has had fans wondering about the status of "Vol. 3" for the series. So far, it appears that the Marvel series will continue with a new director, who has yet to be named. As far as Gunn's script, that was created for the third movie, it may have to be reworked based on some new rumors. That could lead to the movie arriving later than fans may have originally wanted if the rumors prove to be true.

Gunn fired for tweets

The big story within the past few weeks involved Disney deciding to cut ties with writer and director James Gunn.

He'd been the man behind the first two Guardians films, which achieved box office success based on their stories and visuals. Gunn also helped contribute to the "Avengers: Infinity War" film in terms of the script as it related to his movie's characters.

Gunn posted tweets between 2008 and 2012 in which he was critical of Donald Trump and Mike Cernovich. Those tweets made jokes about serious and sensitive topics, including child abuse. Many fans were outraged by the firing, since the tweets had been made six to 10 years prior to his firing. Even members of the cast, including Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, and Bradley Cooper, signed a statement in support of Gunn.

New director to bring new script?

Disney will be hiring a new director for "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.

3" and it seems that rumors are floating around that Gunn's script for the third movie could be thrown out. The reasoning behind this is to completely remove Gunn's association with the project. Omega Underground's Christopher Marc tweeted about the speculation.

Marc said in his tweet, "Looks like Marvel Studios may have indeed tossed out James Gunn's script." He added that if this ends up being confirmed it could lead to production delays.

Originally the movie was scheduled to begin production in February of next year.

The other aspect of getting rid of Gunn's script is to allow the new director a fresh slate to work from on the project. However, a big part of the appeal of the first two Movies was their tone. The fantasy/space opera films featured a lot of good-humored fun mixed in with the special effects and battles.

If a new director took that away with their vision for the third movie, it might make for a mess at the theater.

While there are rumors that Disney will scrap the movie script, a report from The Hollywood Reporter says otherwise. THR indicated that a settlement for Gunn's exit is still in progress and that part of the holdup is that Disney plans to use his script. There's no official confirmation of that, though.

'Guardians Vol. 3' details

The "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" is part of the next wave of releases for the MCU and one of the two scheduled for after the "Avengers 4" movie, which will provide a definitive ending, next year. The fourth Avengers film is slated for May of next year. Ahead of "Guardians" will be "Spider-Man: Far From Home" in July 2019.

In a spoiler alert for those who haven't seen "Avengers: Infinity War," it's expected that all of the cast should be back for the third installment in the Guardians series. That would mean that actors Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista, Zoe Saldana, Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel, Karen Gillan, and Pom Klementieff would reprise their roles.

Originally, production was going to start in February 2019. Depending on what happens with the new director and script, "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" could take some time before it gets into theaters. Disney indicated earlier this month they were in "no rush" to replace James Gunn and would wait for an "A-list" director to become available for the project. Recently, there were also potential "GOTG 3" spoilers that Gunn reacted to on social media.
