There may have already been enough reason to celebrate during Sunday, July 15, when France overcame Croatia to win the 2018 FIFA World Cup, their second French championship since 1998. During the match, however, Soccer fans were not the only ones made happy; 'Doctor Who' fans were pleased as well.

The reason for this is that BBC sneaked in a new trailer during the World Cup Finals Match broadcast, for their 11th season in the 'Doctor Who' revival series that started in 2005. As most people already know, this season is the debut of Jodie Whittaker as the 13th Doctor, and the first female incarnation of the “regenerating” alien sci-fi hero.

New Doctor, new personality, new companions

All told, the World Cup teaser for 'Doctor Who' was less than a minute long, but it did a surprisingly good job on establishing some personality quirks of Jodie Whittaker’s 13th Doctor, as well as revealing her future traveling companions.

The trailer, analyzed on BBC News, shows the new Doctor’s companions in separate places: two diners and a residence, with the 2018 FIFA World Cup playing out on TV in their respective locations. Time briefly goes wonky in all three settings – which the companions notice – before they see that somebody has tweaked some stuff in their vicinities.

Young Ryan (Tosin Cole) realized somebody has dipped into the egg on his meal.

Yasmin (Mandip Gill) is surprised to find her empty pizza box full again. Grizzled middle-aged Graham (Bradley Walsh) discovers his newspaper was replaced with a magazine. The new cast members and their roles were identified by Entertainment Weekly.

Appearing at SDCC 2018

The prospect of having the extraterrestrial (male) Doctor undergoing his periodic regeneration (to swap a retiring actor with his replacement) into a female for a change, was something that had been discussed by some fans and 'Doctor Who' creators on BBC.

It was only with the departure of star Peter Capaldi – the 12th Doctor – alongside show-runner Steven Moffat, that this new direction was realized under the helm of new head writer/executive producer Chris Chibnall.

To further hype up the new main cast for 'Doctor Who' season 11 following the World Cup teaser, Whittaker, Walsh, Cole and Gill will also be present at the 2018 San Diego Comic Con, which will run from Thursday this week to the following Sunday.

Jodie Whittaker’s 13th Doctor first appeared in the 'Doctor Who' 2017 Christmas special episode 'Twice Upon a Time', when she took the place of Peter Capaldi’s character at the tail end of his regeneration. The season 11 proper has been filming since November of last year, and the 13th Doctor, along with her three new companions, will debut when “Doctor Who” returns for Season 11 this October, on BBC One.
