More than a million votes

In a Ranker poll for the greatest movie actor in entertainment history, Tom Hanks received 1.1 million votes, beating the likes of Bette Davis, Marlon Brando, James Stewart and Katherine Hepburn. Joining them in the top 10 were also Robert De Niro, Jack Nicholson, Morgan Freeman, Anthony Hopkins, and Dustin Hoffman.

Career spanning thirty years

Thomas Jeffrey Hanks, better known as Tom Hanks, started off his career in 1980 in the low-budget movie "He Knows You're Alone." His carrer grew rapidly and he has since starred in numerous movies such as "Apollo 13," "The Green Mile," "You've Got Mail," "Cast Away," and more, and has portrayed numerous iconic characters we all remember. He is one of Hollywood's most iconic and recognizable actors, and is known for his down-to-earth attitude, making him very loved across the globe. His movies have grossed more than $9 billion worldwide, which makes Hanks the third highest-grossing actor in North America, coming in after Samuel L. Jackson and Harrison Ford.

The 61-year-old is worth $390 million and has been married to wife Rita Wilson since 1988.

A testament to his love for his wife Rita is the fact that he converted to the Greek Orthodox Church before they married. For his role as a lawyer who battles AIDS in the movie "Philadelphia," Hanks won the 1993 Academy Award for Best Actor. Following the success of "Philadelphia" was "Forrest Gump," a blockbuster hit which made over $600 million at the box office, which earned him his second Academy Award, making him the only actor to win consecutive Best Actor Oscars.
