The British monarchy endowed Ed Sheeran with the honor to become a Member of the Order of the British Empire on December 7, but the singer eventually breached a royal protocol, CBS News reported. Sheeran received the honor from Prince Charles on behalf of Queen Elizabeth.

On Thursday, Sheeran attended a ceremony where he received the honor in recognition for his contributions to the music industry. Aside from this, his role in charity works was also dignified.

However, the singer shared that he might have broken an important royal protocol when he shook the hands of Prince Charles.

He recently appeared in an interview on “Today.” He told hosts, Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb, that he made “a big faux pas” and said he shook Prince Charles’ hands “then grabbed it” even when he was “not meant to do that.”

Details

In the photos that showed Ed Sheeran making the gesture with the prince, he was seen holding the arms of Charles nearby his wrist. They were making eye contact and were engaged in a conversation.

The singer did not receive the traditional shoulder tap using the royal sword since the award did not require the family to conduct this particular rite. Moreover, he also revealed that his late grandfather used to be a huge fan of the British monarchy. His grandfather passed away around four years ago.

Sheeran further noted that his grandfather “was a massive royalist” and said he would be “pretty proud” of this recent achievement. The music icon’s grandfather would also collect commemorative plates and other things which were associated with the royalty.

Recent feat

The Twitter handle of Clarence House has also shared about the award given to the singer.

Clarence House is the official residence of Charles, Prince of Wales, and is located on The Mall in Westminster.

Ed Sheeran is among the few artists in history who have received such honor from the monarchy. Moreover, this was not his sole encounter with the royalty as in January, he spoke about rumors that Princess Beatrice “accidentally cut him” with the knighting sword, CBS News added.

The speculations came after people started talking about a bruise on his face.

This music icon is famous for his songs such as “Perfect,” “Thinking Out Loud,” “Shape Of You,” “Castle On The Hill,” “Photograph,” “Give Me Love,” and “Happier.” He has also been recently named as “Most Streamed Artist in 2017” by Spotify. Not so long after releasing “Perfect,” he has already dropped his latest single with Beyonce titled “Perfect Duet.”
