Tamar Braxton, of the famous singing Braxton sisters, has filed for divorce from her husband/manager Vincent Herbert, according to Essence Magazine report on Thursday. The couple has been married for eight years and were one month shy of their ninth wedding anniversary when Braxton pulled the plug.
All in the family
The relationship between Braxton and Herbert has always seemed to be a case of opposites attract. Viewers were first introduced to them on the reality show, "Braxton Family Values." The family already knew Herbert because he’d served as superstar crooner Toni Braxton’s manager for many years.
Toni played matchmaker and before long Tamar and Herbert were in love and joined in matrimony.
It was a relationship reminiscent of the dynamic between the golden comedy era’s Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz. Ball wanted to be in show business very badly and launched endless schemes trying to worm her way into bandleader Desi Arnaz’s variety shows. In the same way, Braxton was anxious to make her mark in show business. She had long performed as a backup singer for big sister Toni, but in Tamar’s own words, she was tired of being a “doo-wop girl”.
Signs of trouble
Herbert had managed many successful careers, including that of megastar Lady GaGa, so he was well aware of the pitfalls of the music industry.
When the couple got their own spinoff show, "Tamar and Vince," Herbert spent much of the time trying to shield Braxton from the dirtier side of the business. Meanwhile, Braxton was determined to make her way to the top and finally managed to convince Herbert to manage her solo career. He did a masterful job that resulted in Braxton’s albums producing hits, and her landing a gig as a host on the popular television show, "The Real".
To top it all off, the couple became first-time parents to a beautiful baby boy, Logan Vincent Herbert. But just as the couple was basking in the glow of career success and parenthood, things began to go sour. Braxton was suddenly and publically fired from "The Real," and her husband was hit by a lawsuit which ruled in favor of Sony Music to the tune of over $3 million for an advance he was given.
"Tamar and Vince" is set to premiere season five at 9:00 p.m. on November 9th. Industry insiders predict that this season will delve heavily into the issues leading up to the current Divorce. And if the explosive trailers are any indication, there will be no holding back of feelings by all parties involved. The trailer shows Braxton getting advice from celebrity friends like Tiny Harris (wife of rapper T.I.P. Harris), and even shows her wedding ring atop a counter instead of adorning her finger.
