Twenty years after working together in “Titanic,” Kate Winslet and James Cameron are reuniting again for a project. The two blockbuster entities will be collaborating together in at least one of the four “Avatar” sequels that will be coming in the next nine years.
While there are only a few details released about the upcoming “Avatar” movies, the character that Kate Winslet will be playing was confirmed by James Cameron himself as being named “Ronal.” No other information has been released about the character apart from it not being a child. Other cast members from the first installment that will be returning to the sequels include Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, and Sigourney Weaver.
Production at last
The entry of Kate Winslet into the “Avatar” sequels comes just a week after James Cameron officially started production work on the movies. This was after the then-two sequels got delayed several times from its original 2014 and 2015 release dates. The production is currently being done in Manhattan Beach in the Los Angeles County in California.
Cameron’s ambitious gamble
Cameron famously promised that he would be shooting the four sequels in succession, with a total of $1 billion for the entire production. The closest thing to become a precedent for this arrangement was what happened with “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy when Peter Jackson made it. One of the reasons why Cameron was able to leverage his position with 20th Century Fox is the fact that he directed the two top-grossing films, unadjusted to inflation.
His cred with his work on two “Terminator” movies and “Aliens” also helped in securing such a massive amount.
The first collaboration between Kate Winslet and James Cameron, “Titanic,” is notable for being a critical and commercial hit in 1997. It became the first movie to surpass the billion-dollar and two billion-dollar marks in history.
In fact, it held the record for the highest-grossing film until 2010 when Cameron released his next film, “Avatar” in 2009. “Avatar,” eventually grossed a total of $2.78 billion in the worldwide box office.
Kate Winslet can currently be seen in the survival drama movie “The Mountain Between Us” with Idris Elba. “Wonder Wheel,” which is directed by Woody Allen and starring Justin Timberlake, Juno Temple, and Jim Belushi, will also be released by Amazon Studios on Friday, December 1, 2017. The four “Avatar” sequels will be in theaters on Decembers in 2020, 2021, 2024 and 2025.
