A Harvey Weinstein movie was released in theaters over the weekend. It was the first one in theaters since the scandal about the executive was made public. "Amityville: The Awakening" grossed only $742. That is not a typographical error. It was the lowest amount a movie has ever made at the box-office.
It is true, according to the box-office. The movie was scheduled to be released in 2015.
It would have made much more then because it would have been before the news broke about Weinstein's unfavorable encounters with the women who were associated with him in the past.
Reasons for low amount
Weinstein’s scandal isn’t the only reason the new movie had such low numbers. The film is airing free on Google Play at the same time it is in theaters. It began airing on October 12 and will end on November 8, 2017. If people can see it free, why would they go to the theater to see it? Besides, it was released in only ten theaters.
It was no wonder the movie did not do well at the box-office. It had not been advertised or promoted at all.
The movie didn't stand a chance of being a hit because of several delays over the years since it was first scheduled to be released on January 2, 2015.
Well known cast
The supernatural horror film was released in theaters a few days before Halloween. Usually, that type of movie does exceptionally well when it comes out around that time. However, it is not the case with this film. Under another set of circumstances, it would have made more money.
Under the right conditions, the movie might have made a profit because of its well-known actors and actresses including Jennifer Jason Leigh, Jennifer Morrison, Bella Thorne, Thomas Mann, Kurtwood Smith, and Cameron Monaghan.
About the movie
"Amityville: The Awakening" is the tenth installment of the main Amityville series that began way back in 1979.
Other installments had been released throughout the years with the continuation of the same plot of people being haunted by demonic forces.
The movie has been much better in other places. For example, when it was released in the Ukraine, Central America, and the Philippines last summer, it grossed $580,466 when it was shown on 830 screens. It is only in America that the movie isn't making any money.
The $742 the film made over the weekend in the United States means it averaged just $74 from each theater, and it finished 60th at the box-office. The film is scheduled to be released on DVD, Blu-ray, and on demand on November 14, 2017.
