“The Dark Tower” is the latest blockbuster to flop at the box office, and certainly, there’s more to come before the year ends. The film only managed to earn $19.5 million in its first weekend at the U.S. Box office, which a sign of things to come.
The box-office failure isn’t a surprise since the movie has an 18 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a ‘B’ rating from Cinemascore. The film isn’t what critics and fans have come to expect, and not even Idris Elba as the leading man could change things.
A movie based on books
For those who have little knowledge of “The Dark Tower,” it’s a movie based on books of the same name.
Stephen King is the author of these books, eight of them to be exact. The story is all about the last Gunslinger and his need to capture or kill The Man in Black, a sorcerer.
The goal of "The Man in Black” is to destroy the Dark Tower for the destruction of all worlds. The Gunslinger, whose real name is Roland, doesn’t want this to happen. However, it’s never easy being a regular human going against a sorcerer with impressive powers.
One of the reasons for the book’s success has much to do with the dialogue, characters, and the overall atmosphere. Sadly enough, the director of the film decided to create an action blockbuster instead of the elements that earned the fame of the book.
The first book is quite deep and long, henceforth, it shouldn’t be possible to tell that story in little over an hour.
It would have been best if this story was told on TV where the first book’s story could be told in a single season. This would give the writers and directors to flesh out the characters a lot more.
What about other films at the box office?
“Dunkirk” sits at the number two spot with a weekend earning of $17.6 million, which allowed the film to surpass the $300 million mark worldwide.
So far, the movie’s domestic total is a cool $133.5 million.
Another Warner Bros. movie still making it big at the box office is “Wonder Woman.” It earned $2.3 million at the box office, boosting its overall income close to $800 mill worldwide. The popular movie also earned a whopping $400 million at the domestic box office, which is a clear sign that superhero movies with female leads aren't such a bad thing.
The DC Extended Universe is finally showing signs of recovery. This is the first film to get excellent ratings from most critics, and will likely become the top earner before the end of 2017. Now, only if "Justice League" will show similar promise.
