Several spin-offs, prequels, and re-adaptation of classic and popular horror franchises are bound to terrorize avid fans this year. Among the highly anticipated spin-offs are “Cult Of Chucky,” “Leatherface” and the eighth installment of the “Saw” franchise, “Jigsaw.”

A massive screaming fest is expected to run for two seasons this 2017 as several horror franchises will not only be released this summer but also this fall. Despite the bad reputation of horror movie spin-offs in recent years, the upcoming releases might be a good way to bring the horror/thriller genre back to life.

‘Cult of Chucky’

As for the highly anticipated “Cult of Chucky,” the film is set to be released in the United States on Oct. 3. Brad Dourif is reprising his role as Chucky, while his daughter Fiona will play as Nica Pierce and Jennifer Tilly as Tiffany. Alex Vincent will be Andy Barclay, and he will be joined by Summer H. Howell, Grace Lynn Kung, Zak Santiago and Michael Therriault. The film will focus on Nica’s asylum confinement.

In a recent interview, “Child’s Play” creator/director Don Mancini revealed that the “cult” on the film’s title actually refers to the fans who like the movies. Mancini added that the film also took inspiration from “Inception” and “A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warrior,” Fansided noted.

Mancini also explained that Andy Barclay’s character (one of the movie’s main roles) is very important. As per Bloody Disgusting, Mancini explored more on the life of Barclay, who is dealing with PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder) for three decades.

‘Leatherface’

Another highly anticipated spin-off of a popular film franchise is “Leatherface.” The film is the long-overdue prequel of the 1974 classic, “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.”

The upcoming prequel is scheduled for release on Oct. 20, with a Rated R rating from the MPAA. It is also set to premiere at the FrightFest Film Festival in London on Aug.

25, while an exclusive DirecTV debut will be on Sept. 21.

As for the plot and cast, the film is described as a “brutal and nihilistic road movie” that will depict the story of four mental hospital inmates who are on the run and were involved in the kidnapping case of a young nurse. As previously reported, one of the mental hospital escapees will be the Sawyer family’s youngest child.

Moreover, the film will reveal the origins of the iconic masked villain known as Leatherface. It will also follow the quest for vengeance of Sheriff Hal Hartman, whose daughter was killed.

Meanwhile, the film will feature the acting prowess of Stephen Dorff aka Hal Hartman, Lili Taylor as Verna Sawyer, Finn Jones and four mental escapees are James Bloor, Sam Coleman, Sam Strike and Jessica Madsen.

The film has also released a green-band trailer, which will certainly not disappoint the fans, Entertainment Weekly noted. It is written by Seth M. Sherwood and directed by French filmmakers Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo.

‘Saw 8: Jigsaw’

The last but certainly not the least on our list is the upcoming “Saw” installment titled, “Jigsaw.” According to Coming Soon, Lionsgate has released a Japanese poster for the film, which is scheduled to premiere on Oct. 27.

The upcoming sequel will follow a murder investigation after victims were brutally killed around the city. Things get quite petrifying as the story unfolds and clues start to directly point towards notorious serial killer John Kramer aka Jigsaw, who has been dead for ten years.

It was also reported that the characters of the film will play a “new psychotic game” that will follow the previous set of rules, which is to “Live or Die.” According to directors Michael and Peter Spierig, the film features “interesting twists and wild traps.” In fact, Michael even described the sequel as “vicious” and a “perfect Halloween scare-fest.”

Meanwhile, Tobin Bell is reprising the role of John Kramer/Jigsaw. James Gomez, Michael Boisvert, Shaquan Lewis, Josiah Black, Hannah Emily Anderson, Matt Passmore, Callum Keith Rennie, Brittany Allen, Laura Vandervoort and Mandela Van Peebles are also part of the movie.
