The Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN) has renewed its sitcom “Greenleaf” for season 3, Deadline reports.
“Greenleaf” follows a family which is rife with secrets, lies, and scandals. It centers on the journey of Grace (Merle Dandridge) who has returned home after twenty years on the occasion of the mysterious death of her sister (Faith). “We cannot wait to see what another season will bring,” OWN president Erik Logan told Deadline.
The show is instrumental in evolving OWN’s scripted programming and continues to pull in viewers every month with its amazing characters and storyline.
Who is in the cast?
The cast of “Greenleaf” includes Lamman Rucker, Greg Alan Williams, Deborah Joy Winans, Kim Hawthorne, Rick Fox, Tye White, Lovie Simone, and Desiree Ross. Its first and second seasons received positive reviews from critics; the performances of Merle Dandridge, Keith David, and Lynn Whitfield were admired worldwide. The series has an average rating of 79% on Rotten Tomatoes, based on eighteen reviews, while its Metacritic scores are 68 out of 100 based on twenty critics.
In September 2015, it was announced that executive producer Oprah Winfrey joined “Greenleaf” as Mavis McCready. Is he playing the same role in the third season? OWN has not commented anything in this regard. The second season of “Greenleaf” received over 1.55 million viewers. That is down from 2.10 million for the first season but still a decent number for the network.
When will the new season premiere?
Season 2 resumes August 15, but there is no information about when the third season is going to premiere. In the show, Dandridge is naturalistic in her portrayal of a lady examining her history and her mistakes, while Whitfield has the imperious aura of a grand soap opera diva in the tradition of Joan Collins.
For months, OWN has been focusing on the development of original content and high-profile series.
The network has reportedly joined hands with Mara Brock Akil, Salim Akil, Will Packer, and Ava DuVernay for a few new programs. The network’s investment in scripted series is growing rapidly as the cable demonstrates its abilities to draw a crowd with what OWN President Erik Logan names “elevated scripted programming” for young ladies. The combination of talented actors, inspirational music, and brilliant creators has positioned this show for a long run, and fans can hardly to see where its third season takes them.
