"The Originals" Season 5 is officially happening, as The CW drama has renewed "The Vampire Diaries" spinoff series for another season. Many fans were equally relieved to learn about the show's renewal, especially after the events that took place in the Season 4 finale of the drama. What future awaits the Mikaelsons following the sacrifice they made in the finale?

Showrunner explains Season 4 finale and teases what's ahead

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, departing executive producer Michael Narducci explained his decision to end "The Originals" Season 4 in such a manner that left the Mikaelson siblings with no choice but to separate and go on their own paths. According to Narducci, he, along with the rest of the writers believed that The CW drama had to exemplify the consequences of the Mikaelsons' evil deeds and how they would pay for them. The Season 4 finale of the show has seen the Mikaelsons separate from each other in order to protect Hope and keep The Hollow from coming back to life.

Not only did Klaus (Joseph Morgan), Rebekah (Claire Holt), Elijah (Daniel Gillies) and Kol (Nathaniel Buzolic) leave New Orleans, but one Mikaelson sibling took one step further to protect Hope. In "The Originals" Season 4 finale, Elijah chose to erase his memories, especially his vow of "always and forever" to his siblings in order to make sure that he would stay away from his brothers. Narducci explained that this was somewhat freeing for Elijah, as this vow always seemed to give him some sort of pain.

"He amputates the most important thing in his life, the thing that had given him at least a modicum of solace — his commitment to these brothers and sisters," Narducci explained.

While he remains unsure of what lies ahead on "The Originals" Season 5, the departing showrunner promised viewers that Julie Plec, who will be the new executive producer, will give fans "the best season yet." Narducci said that he was excited to watch what happens and see what else Plec will bring to the table.

Haylijah, Klaroline and more on Season 5

While the upcoming season of the show will possibly have a time jump, many fans are looking forward to see what will happen to the characters in terms of the romance department. With Hayley (Phoebe Tonkin) and Elijah going on their separate ways, it seems like Haylijah fans will not get their happily ever after for the couple just yet. Narducci said that their separation was a painful and difficult decision, but they acted for their best interests.

As for Klaus and Caroline (Candice King) aka Klaroline, there have been a lot of rumors that these two will finally get their second chance on "The Originals" Season 5, as the Season 4 finale seemingly hinted on Caroline's appearance. Hope was headed to Caroline's school, which further strengthened speculations about a Klaroline romance next season.
