Nominations for the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards were announced Wednesday, July 28, with rapper Kendrick Lamar dominating for his new video "Humble." Right behind Kendrick’s eight nominations are The Weeknd and Katy Perry with their five nominations. Music videos released from June 2016 to June 2017 are eligible for this year’s show, according to the First Post.

It is also reported that the gendered categories of Best Male Video and Best Female Video have been replaced by a new award, Artist of the Year.

Kendrick Lamar, Katy Perry, and The Weeknd lead MTV Video Music Awards nominations

According to the Los Angeles Times, Katy Perry, The Weeknd, and Kendrick Lamar lead the pack in 2017 MTV Video Music Awards nominations. Kendrick comes in first place with his nominations for “Humble” in eight different categories, including Artist of the Years, Best Hip Hop, Video of the Year, Best Cinematography, Best Visual Effects, Best Choreography, Best Direction and Best Art Direction.

The rapper will give tough completion to Bruno Mars, Ariana Grande, The Weeknd, Lorde and Ed Sheeran for the “Artist of the Year” award.

Other “Video of the Year” nominees are Mars for "24K Magic," Alessia Cara for "Scars To Your Beautiful," The Weeknd for "Reminder,” DJ Khaled, Bryson Tiller and Rihanna for "Wild Thoughts." Katy Perry is forefront with her new video for "Chained to the Rhythm," while Skip Marley has been nominated for Best Art Direction, Best Pop, Best Visual Effects and Best Direction.

The Weeknd has been nominated in three categories for “Reminder,” including Best Art Direction, Best Editing, and Best Direction.

Who is hosting the award ceremony?

Katy Perry will perform and host at the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards, Deadline reports. She is the first performer announced for this year’s award ceremony and one of the most-nominated artists with four nominations.

Viacom global entertainment group’s CEO Bruce Gillmer names Katy Perry as the “best artist of the year.”

That is Katy’s first time hosting the VMAs. In 2016, the show did not have a traditional host; instead, it featured Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele as leading commentators. Miley Cyrus served as a host in the 2015 MTV Video Music Awards.

MTV unleashed its first promo for the award show on Billboard, featuring all big artists such as Katy Perry, The Weeknd, Miley Cyrus and others.

This year’s award show will be held on August 27, 2017, at The Forum in Inglewood, honoring the best singers and music videos. Fans can vote online for nominees in eight different categories.
