“Wonder Woman” hit the cinemas a few days ago, and has earned over $102 million at the domestic box office. It is one of the best-performing superhero movies of all time, and the highest-grossing summer film to date.
Previously, it was not expected that “Wonder Woman” will do such an excellent business since a female has directed the movie. With its smashing success, Patty Jenkins has proved everyone wrong. It would not be a mistake to say that Gal Gadot has performed very well in the DC Extended Universe movie.
At the box-office
“Wonder Woman” stacks up against other superhero movies, including “Suicide Squad,” “X-Men,” “Guardians of the Galaxy,” and “The Avengers.” In 2016, “Deadpool” grossed over $132 million in its opening weekend and a total of $783 million during its theatrical run.
In 2013, “Man of Steel” earned $116 million in its opening weekend and ended its theoretical run by grossing $667 million. “Spider-Man,” released in 2002, made over $113 million from 3,615 screens in its opening weekend and the totals were $585 million.
“Doctor Strange” was released in 2016. This film earned $85 million in its opening weekend and an average of $677 million during its theatrical run. “Wonder Woman,” on the other hand, made $103 million in its opening weekend, and the totals are $224 million at the global box office. But it’s just the beginning, and we hope that this film will earn at least $1.2 billion during its theatrical run.
“Wonder Woman” has even broken the box office records of “X-Men Origins: Wolverine,” “Thor,” “Captain America: The First Avengers” and “Hulk,” which grossed $85 million, $65 million, $62 million, and $59 million respectively.
The Patty Jenkins-directed film grossed a lot more than the estimates in its opening weekend, becoming the fourth top-ranked movie of 2017.
The film’s ratings
No doubt, “Wonder Woman” has surpassed every debut for superheroes in MCU, some of which have been mentioned above. As of June 3, 2017, “Wonder Woman” has made $102 million in the US and Canada and over $120 million in other territories against a budget of $150 million.
Early projections revealed that the superhero movie would gross $70 to $90 million in its opening weekend, but it earned a lot more than the estimates.
Critics and audiences are praising the performance of Chris Pine and Gal Gadot. Overall, “Wonder Woman” has received positive comments, and its Rotten Tomatoes rating is 92% based on 403 critics.
On Metacritic, the film got an average score of 86 out of 100 based on 203 reviews.
In April 2017, Patty Jenkins revealed that she would develop “Wonder Woman 2, ” but there is no information whether Gadot will play the leading role or not.
