News of the musical was broke by The Hollywood Reporter, which unveiled that the "Jagged Little Pill"-based musical will debut in May 2018 and that the artist will collaborate with several equally talented individuals.

The musical's book is written by Diablo Cody

The upcoming musical gathers a slew of amazing talents alongside Alanis Morissette. In fact, the "Jagged Little Pill" musical will be directed by Diane Paulus of "Waitress" and will feature musical arrangements by "Next to Normal"'s Tom Kitt. Screenwriter Diablo Cody, who won an Academy Award for 2007's "Juno," will be making her Broadway debut with the musical. The project is a collaboration from Morissette and Cody, which will tell a story with themes revolving around gender identity, family, and race. Morissette said in a statement that it's her "musical theater dream come true" to have her "deeply personal songs that are part of my soul’s marrow" evolved into a musical that would tell stories that are relevant in this day and age.

Cody added that she's so excited to tell a modern story through these iconic songs. Alanis's music is full of powerful narratives that lend themselves organically to this process."

Glen Ballard-produced best-selling record turns 22

Alanis Morissette's "Jagged Little Pill" turns 22 years old this month, and in an interview with Elle back in 2015, the singer and songwriter shared that she's glad she "can happily stand by everything that was written, content-wise, 20 years ago." The upcoming musical is a testament of Morissette's unique songwriting, as the themes in the record are relevant to this day.

She told Elle in another interview, "Thankfully, the the stories that were being told I can stand by, so I'm not cringing when I repeat them. There was a timelessness to what I was expressing, which, of course, I had no idea about at the time."
