"Baywatch" was a successful TV serial. The producers thought to cash in on its popularity by making a full-length film. Unfortunately, things have not gone according to plan and the movie has turned out to be a damp squib. It has failed at the box office and critics have panned the film. The film is reviewed by Rotten Tomatoes
The film
Much was expected with Dwayne Johnson in the lead along with Pamela Anderson.
A matter of interest was the launch of Bollywood actress Priyanka Chopra as the villain. The "Quantico" star was expected to launch her career in Hollywood with this debut film. The film has been panned by critics and many have criticized it for its vulgarity. Worse, the film has bombed at the box office. All the rippling muscles of Dwayne Johnson and a bevy of bikini-clad girls with Priyanka Chopra have been unable to save the film
Dwayne Johnson
Dwayne Johnson had announced that he would oppose President Trump in the next election for president. Despite his denial, this film will not further his prospects.
Basically, the film has not clicked with the audience and the result is a dismal failure for Johnson. Despite his big name, the film has not attracted the patrons to the cinema halls.
Priyanka Chopra
Much was expected from Priyanka. Though she was the villain she played an important role. Generally, she is the only saving grace in an otherwise insipid film. Chopra has a committed fan following in both America and India. They won't be disappointed but failure at the box office will be a dampener for them. Priyanka looks sizzling in a bikini and most critics feel she did a good job.
Deepika
Priyanka Chopra's rival Deepika Padukone had made her debut in " Return of Xander Cage". This film clicked at the box office and Deepika will act in the next film of the series.
Priyanka may have a little tough time to emulate Deepika. A poor box office collection and a low rating by film critics is not the best way to make a mark in the film world. One will have to keep the fingers crossed for Chopra.
Priyanka' s future
Chopra doesn't have any other project lined up in Hollywood. It's a pity that her global debut won't bring her the recognition she wished for. The film's poor collection do not seem to bother Johnson who has dismissed it with a shrug. He is too big a star to be bothered by one flop. Many big Hollywood stars have had flops but they have taken them in their stride.
Last word
The producers of " Baywatch" will have to think where they went wrong. Sometimes it's not good business to try and make a full-length film from a successful serial.
