After the massive success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe or MCU, other franchises are following suit by building up a shared universe with familiar characters. While DC and Warner Bros. have the highly anticipated "Justice League," which arrives later this year, Legendary Entertainment, together with Warner Bros. also have the MonsterVerse, which is composed of the 2014 film by Gareth Edwards, "Godzilla," and this year's Jordan Vogt-Roberts-directed film, "Kong: Skull Island." The former will be followed by "Godzilla: King of Monsters," which is set to debut in 2019, and all the films will be culminated upon the arrival of "Godzilla vs. Kong" in 2020.

While the film will hit theaters years from now, moviegoers would be glad to know that the studio has rescheduled the "Godzilla vs. Kong" release date a week earlier.

Warner Bros. moves release date a week early

The studio has adjusted their release calendar for the next few years, thereby affecting the "Godzilla vs. Kong" release date. According to Deadline, the film will now have a new release date of May 22, 2020, instead of its original May 29, 2020 debut. This will arrive in time for Memorial Day Weekend on May 25th.

MonsterVerse expanding with the addition of Godzilla

This year's "Kong: Skull Island" was met with box office success, earning $562.4 million on a $185 million budget.

The film was directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts and reunites Marvel's "Avengers" stars Tom Hiddleston and Samuel L. Jackson in a reboot of the "King Kong" franchise. The film also features John Goodman, and Brie Larson, among others. The 2014 film "Godzilla" will be succeeded by "Godzilla: King of the Monsters" in 2019, which will be directed by Michael Dougherty, as Edwards departed the project last year to work on other films. In January, "Stranger Things" breakout star Millie Bobby Brown was confirmed to play a role in the upcoming film, together with "Friday Night Lights" star Kyle Chandler, Vera Farmiga ("Up in the Air"), and most recently, Aisha Hinds ("True Blood") and Anthony Ramos (Broadway's "Hamilton").

Viewers should anticipate the new "Godzilla vs. Kong" release date of May 22, 2020.

Universal launching their own monster universe

Godzilla and Kong aren't the only monsters who are hitting the big screen soon, as Universal Studios is also launching the Universal Monsters film series with this year's "The Mummy," led by Tom Cruise. This will be followed by yet-untitled films on the Invisible Man, Wolf Man, Van Helsing, Creature from the Black Lagoon, and Bride of Frankenstein.
