The cast, crew and creators of “The Leftovers” met at Avalon Hollywood Tuesday night in celebration of the final season of the dramatic series. One thing that has been made very clear is that this season is the end of the series. There is no open-ended possibility about the finale of the new season. Co-creator Damon Lindelof told Variety there is no possibility whatsoever of a spinoff and no “to be continued” about the final season of the HBO show.
While some fans might be disappointed to have only one season left to watch, Lindelof did say that the audience will see as satisfying an ending as they can possibly give.
‘The Leftovers’ heads to Australia
In the second season, we saw the Garvey family, along with Nora Durst, leaving New York for their new home in Texas. In the third season, we see them heading off to Australia, which makes for a whole new ball game. There has been a prediction all along that the world will end seven years after the Sudden Departure, when two percent of the world’s population disappeared without a trace and for an unknown and mysterious reason.
“The Leftovers” co-creator Tom Perrotta says that the move to Australia will heighten the sense of spiritual searching. The popular characters are, in essence, going to the end of the world to try and find a little peace.
Perrotta said that when he first started the book back in 2009, he was thinking about 9/11 and the financial crisis and the way the world was divided by this. He now also refers to the 2016 election, saying the aftermath of the show’s Sudden Departure can be applied to almost any traumatic event. Talking of the election he said that in November, many people felt sort of "Leftovers"-y. He said some people were shocked by the result and that they were feeling a type of collective grief.
Perrotta added that some people are still feeling that today and that is what the show is about. It’s about people in a traumatic space, handling it in different ways.
A satisfying ending to ‘The Leftovers’ in season three
“The Leftovers” actress Carrie Coon, who plays Nora Durst, says she felt very satisfied with her work as the filming of the final season ended. She said for a show like this one, you can either have an explosive and shocking ending, or you can have an ending that feels truthful. She believes that’s what they have done, adding she is proud to have been a part of it.
Justin Theroux said he is going to miss all the colleagues he worked with on the show, both behind and in front of the cameras.
Theroux said now that it's the finale, he thinks a small group of them will get together Sundays to watch the show and that they will watch the finale together.
Meanwhile Hollywood Life notes that Jennifer Aniston (Theroux’s wife) looked absolutely stunning at Tuesday’s premiere of the final season, in a skin-tight black leather mini-dress, but they did add that Justin looked pretty good too in his suit.
Fans of “The Leftovers” can watch the premiere episode on HBO on April 16. In the meantime readers can watch the teaser for the final season below.
