"Guardians Of The Galaxy 2" doesn't even come out until May 5, 2107, but Marvel has so much confidence in writer-director James Gunn and his property that they have green-lit a third movie in the franchise. The announcement came straight from Gunn himself on Facebook when he said that he would rather share the information with the fans before talking to reporters about it as he promotes the second movie in the popular Marvel sci-fi series.
A third "Guardians" movie is coming
James Gunn was humorous as always when talking about the announcement for a third "Guardians of the Galaxy" movie. After making some jokes about dancing around the backyard pretending to be Kurt Russell and Sylvester Stallone and about it being easier to make this movie because he knew fans wanted it, Gunn sprung the announcement for everyone. James said that he wanted to wait to commit to a third movie for Marvel until he was sure that it was something he really had his heart set on doing. Gunn also said he wants to buck the trend of lackluster endings to trilogies and wants to finish as strong as he started.
James Gunn said that it has nothing to do with money but it has to do with a love for the characters - names like Groot, Rocket, Drax, and more. He said that he will push the third "Guardians of the Galaxy" movie to something more than even the fans expect, which he said is what made the first one so successful. He also touted his relationship working with Marvel as a reason to continue.
"Guardians of the Galaxy 2"
Before James Gunn gets started writing and directing another "Guardians of the Galaxy" movie, he has press and the release of the second movie in the series. This movie is part of the big lead-in to the "Avengers: Infinity War" movies, which actually played a strong role in the first "Guardians" movie.
However, reports are that the Infinity Gems are not part of this second movie, although it will introduce new characters in Mantis, Ego the Living Planet (Kurt Russell), and the still mysterious Sylvester Stallone role.
It was also reported in February that the first "Guardians of the Galaxy 2" test screenings received a very rare 100-percent approval rating. That was better than both "The Avengers" and "Iron Man 3," which both received very high ratings for Marvel. That makes it sound like James Gunn knows exactly what the fans want and that makes news of a third movie in the series very excited for both comic book fans and moviegoers alike.
