In February 2011, Universal Studios spent over $4 million on movie rights to the Asher novel, with Gomez serving as executive producer and playing the character of Baker.
In October 2016, it was reported that Netflix would develop a TV adaptation of the novel, with Tom McCarthy serving as a director. The series has been financed by Paramount Television and Anonymous Content. Most of the scenes have been shot in towns of San Rafael, Benicia, Vallejo, Sebastopol, and Crockett.

On Metacritic, “13 Reasons Why” has scored 77 out of 100 based on 17 reviews. Jesse Schedeen from IGN has stated that it is an impressive series with the great star cast.
Matthew Gilbert from The Verge claims that the show is engaging and fantastic. Leah Greenblatt from Entertainment Weekly has said that the season is amazing, and the performances of Dylan as Clay and Katherine as Hannah are outstanding.
