As Oscars 2017 make their way into the history books, there was no shortage of drama to add as a footnote. In one of the biggest snafus in Academy history, Best Picture winner was announced as “La La Land.” However, it was incorrectly named as the Best Picture, as the presenters had been given the wrong envelope. With a “La La Land” celebration in full bloom on stage, it was finally announced that the award actually went to “Moonlight.”
Apparently, the presenters, Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway had been handed a duplicate envelope of the one that went to Emma Stone for her win as best actress for “La La Land.”
And on to the other winners
Casey Affleck bagged the best actor award for his performance in the film “Manchester by the Sea.” It was Emma Stone’s first Oscar.
She has received high praise for several other movies she has been in, but her role in “Mis Dolan” was the clincher. She was also nominated for her supporting actress role in the film “Birdman” in 2014.
The support actor and actress awards went to Mahershala Ali for “Moonlight” and Viola Davis for the film “Fence.”
‘La La Land’ Wins Six Awards at Oscar 2017
Even though ‘La La Land’ was incorrectly named as the best picture, it did win six awards at Oscar 2017. Out of a record-tying nominations, the Lion’s Gate production design (Damien Chazella), Best Actress (Emma Stone), Best Production Design (David Wasco), Best Cinematographer (Linus Sandgren), Best Score (Justin Hurwitz) and Best Original Song (City of Stars.) Presenter Faye Dunaway wrongly read “La La Land” and as the members started to thank, it was announced that it was a mistake and “Moonlight” was the actual winner.
Casey Affleck won his first Oscar in best actor category for the film “Manchester by the Sea.” It is the 3rd film to have won multiple awards at the Oscar 2017.
Colleen Atwood won her 4th Oscar for the Best Costume Designer for the movie “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.” This is the first time a “Harry Potter” film won an Oscar.
The other notable winners of 2017 Academy Awards
Writers Barry Jenkins (screenplay) and Tarell Alvin McCraney (story) won the award for adapter screenplay for the film “Moonlight.”
The original Screenplay award was won by Kenneth Lonergan for the film “Manchester by the Sea.” “The Salesman”, a film from Iran won the Best Foreign Language film.
Best visual effects
The best Visual Effects award was given to the team of “Jungle Book”, Adam Valdez, Robert Legato, Andrew R. Jones and Dan Lemmon and the Sound Mixing award went to Andy Wright, Kevin O’Connell, Peter Grace and Robert Mackenzie for their efforts for the movie ‘Hacksaw Ridge.’
In the music category, the Original Song award was won by the “City of Stars” from the movie “La La Land.” The music was done by Justin Hurwitz and lyrics were written by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul. “La La Land” also won Justin Hurwitz the Oscar for Original Score.
The Oscar 2017 was not without anti-Trump statements but they were all rather overshadowed by the best picture announcement drama.
