A pilot for "Mayans MC," the preliminary title for the spin-off to the popular outlaw motorcycle drama "Sons of Anarchy," was recently ordered by FX. The Mayans motorcycle club, which will be the focus of the new show, was featured regularly throughout "Sons of Anarchy's" seven-season run. It has now been reported that #Edward James Olmos has landed a role in the upcoming series.
The show will reportedly center around the life of EZ Reyes, a young prospect within the Mayans MC. According to Deadline, Olmos will be playing Felipe Reyes, the father of EZ. Felipe Reyes wrestles with outrunning his past while trying to lead his sons down a better path.
Mayans MC is a 'post-Jax Teller world'
Although many have wondered if Charlie Hunnam might reprise his role as Jackson "Jax" Teller in "Mayans MC," the show will reportedly focus on events following the conclusion of "Sons of Anarchy." Jax served as the president of SAMCRO, the original charter of the Sons of Anarchy motorcycle club, for the show's final three seasons.
However, the character died at the end of Season 7, which makes it is a bit difficult to imagine how a cameo might fit into the storyline, unless it were to come in the form of a flashback.
Filming for "Mayans MC" will reportedly begin in March, but an air date has not yet been revealed. Kurt Sutter, the creator of "Sons of Anarchy," is working in collaboration with Elgin James on the project.
A long career in film and television
Olmos, who has been appearing in film and T.V. since the 1970s, has had notable roles in "Battlestar Galactica" and "Blade Runner." From 1984-90, he starred as Lieutenant Martin Castillo on the popular police drama "Miami Vice." In addition to Olmos, the show also featured Don Johnson and Michael Philip Thomas, who starred as main characters James "Sonny" Crockett and Ricardo "Rico" Tubbs, respectively.
"Miami Vice" featured many guest appearances from actors who went on to have big careers in Hollywood, including, but not limited to, Bruce Willis, Liam Neeson, and Ving Rhames. More recently, the now 69-year-old Olmos played Professor Gellar in Season 6 of "Dexter," and starred alongside Mark Wahlberg and Denzel Washington in the 2013 movie "2 Guns."
