The 89th Academy Awards’ were given on February 26, 2017, and the event was staged at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood, Los Angeles. The Academy Awards or the Oscar as it is commonly referred is awarded for 24 categories.

"La La Land" had to its credit 14 nominations at the 89th Oscars, and it equaled “Titanic” for having the most nomination for a single film. It also had a guffaw to its name when presenters Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty announced that "La La Land" had won the Best Picture award. She was holding the envelope which Stone had won a few moments before.

The producers quickly rectified the error, and declared that the actual winner was “The Moonlight.”

'Moonlight' wins the best picture

The American drama “Moonlight” received eight Oscar nominations and eventually wonBest Picture award. The best sound editing and best film editing went to “Hacksaw Ridge” which was a 2016 biographical war film. It told the story of World War II pacifist combat medic experiences of Desmond Doss, who refused to carry a gun. The flick was directed by Mel Gibson and featured Andrew Garfield as Doss.

“Manchester by Sea” had Casey Affleck receiving the Best Actor award at the Oscars and it also won the Best Original Screenplay award. Damien Chazelle won the Best Director award for his musical comedy flick “La La Land.” Emma Stone who portrayed the role of Mia Dolan in the movie went on to win the Best Actress Award.

Mahershala Ali won the Best Supporting Actor award for his portrayal of bully Juan in “Moonlight.” Viola Davis won the best-supporting-actress award for “Fences". She also became the first African–American woman to win an Emmy, Tony, and Oscar in acting categories.

Iranian Film 'The Salesman' gets best foreign film award

The best film in the international category was won by the Iranian Film which was directed by Asghar Farhadi.

Farhadi was to attend the ceremony but due to Trump’s travel ban was unable to attend it. Later he refused an offer of waiver and said that he would protest against the times we have reached. However, on February 24, Farhadi sent Anousheh Ansari, the first female space tourist, and another NASA scientist Firouz Naderi, to represent him at the Oscar’s.
