#RIPSelena is trending on Twitter today and this had her fans scrambling to find out what has happened to Selena Gomez. Today's generation may not be acquainted with the singer who reigned two decades ago and who needed no last name, she was simply "Selena." This is the singer that Twitter has tagged in #RIPSelena.

Twitter trend starts frenzy

The iconicSelena Quintanilla-Pérezwas a popular American singer in the early 1990s, who was shot and killed by a friend. Selena was so popular that George W. Bush, who was the governor of Texas at the time Selena was shot and killed, declared her birthday "Selena Day" in that state.

Wax statue starts trend?

So why is #RIPSelena trending on Twitter today if it's not her birthday, as she was born on April 16, 1971 and it is not anywhere near the anniversary of the date of her death. Selena died on March 31, 1995. The reason the singer is trending today is probably because she has recently been honored with a wax figure in her likeness at Madame Tussauds of Hollywood.

Selena's talent made her world famous and she sold out her shows where ever she was appearing. She was cut-down so early in life, but there's no doubt that if she had lived, Selena would have been a name the younger generation would know today.

Selena has been honored with an extremely life-likewax statue, which is valued at $350,000. The outfit that the figure is donning is a replica of what Selena wore at one of her concerts back in 1993, when she appeared at the Memorial Coliseum, reports KrisTV.com.

As with everything that the Madame Tussauds Museum creates, the attention to detail is awe inspiring. The figure is sporting a rhinestone-encrusted belt buckle.

The bustier top that is on the Selena figurine, is indicative of the mode of dress worn by pop singers of that era.

Fans got a jolt...

Needless to say that the #RIPSelena gave Selena Gomez fans quite the jolt when looking at the Twitter trends this morning. Many added a post to Twitter to convey how thankful they were to find out that it wasn't Selena Gomez assigned to the hashtag. As you can see below, this is one of many tweets that took the hashtag to mean Selena Gomez. Some people were actually mad and accused the #RIPSelena trend of being nothing more than a click-bait ploy after Selena Gomez recently announced she is taking a hiatus due to health concerns.
