The 2018 Grammys have not even commenced yet and it is already coming off as a disappointment. This is due to the fact that some fan-favorites have been snubbed, including Lady Gaga, Ed Sheeran, Demi Lovato, Katy Perry, The Weeknd, Kesha, Miley Cyrus, and Alicia Keys. The 2018 Grammy nominations have evidently left off many of pop's biggest names. It is an absolute shock that Ed Sheeran didn't get nominated for record, song, or album of the year. This goes to show that the Grammys are inevitably unpredictable. Looking at the 2017 Grammy's, Beyonce got nominations in every category, and Adele won five Grammys and song of the year.
The 60th Grammy Awards show airs live on CBS on January 28.
Disappointment
The albums "After Laughter" by Paramore and "Tell Me You Love Me" by Demi Lovato were snubbed and it is very disappointing for many fans. Many haven’t stop listening to either album since they came out and not being nominated for any Grammys is a big surprise. Paramore's album sheds light upon songs that focus on mental health such as "Hard Times" and "Told You So," so the album definitely deserved to be nominated. Bringing attention to an important topic like mental health was uniquely done through the lyrics and sound of the album.
The fact that the song "Despacito" has two major grammy nominations and Dua Lipa, Katy Perry, Demi Lovato, and so many other great female artists didn't get nominated, is disappointing.
But, there are many other amazing women that did get nominated. For example, Alessia Cara and Julia Michaels have been nominated for best new artist. This is fantastic, as both came out with some spectacular music. Furthermore, it could just be that those albums didn’t have as much impact on the industry. I think many can agree that the song "Despacito" was a smash hit.
Overall, it was number one for sixteen consecutive weeks. Additionally, the song was overplayed to the point that people were getting tired of the song. We must consider whether sales matter more than the actual quality and lyrics of a song.
Nominated artists of 2018
Now, looking at the artists who did get nominated, the most nominated artists are Jay-Z with eight, Kendrick Lamar with seven, Bruno Mars with six, and Khalid and Childish Gambino with five.
Both Jay-Z and Kendrick Lamar will compete in top categories, including album of the year and record of the year. The album of the year nominees include Jay-Z's "4:44," Lamar's "Damn," Childish Gambino's "Awaken, My Love," Lorde's "Melodrama," and Bruno Mars' "24K Magic."
