Baker Mayfield is well on his way to winning the Heisman Trophy now that Lamar Jackson seems to have been knocked out of the running with one bad game. Baker Mayfield practically beat Ohio State by himself, and the Sooners might have the second best offense in America behind only Oklahoma State. This kid can win the Heisman with his rookie head coach, and it would be one of the more special relationships between a coach and quarterback that we have ever seen. Riley came to Oklahoma to help Mayfield become a superstar, and these two could ride off into the sunset together.

Riley has the tools to make this happen

Lincoln Riley can choose to make Baker Mayfield the most prolific quarterback in the country just by calling plays. He has that kind of power over this offense, and he should keep calling Mayfield's number because Mayfield is on a hot streak like we have not seen. The Sooners look amazing, and they could be on their way to a berth in the college football playoff. That means that Mayfield could win a national title, the Heisman, and he would do so with a rookie head coach. We would forever speak of these two guys in the same breath just like Bill Walsh and Joe Montana.

The Big 12 is wide open

Only Oklahoma State stands in the way of the Sooners streaking into the College Football Playoff, and that could be good news for the Sooners.

They have a weak conference to thank for their easy path to the playoff, and they can score just as many points as Oklahoma State can. That will be an amazing matchup to see, and Riley could allow Mayfield to beat the Cowboys all by himself. That would make him a lock to win the Heisman Trophy, and it would give the Sooners a lot of momentum going into the playoff.

The synergy is real

The synergy between Mayfield and Riley is a very real thing that we can see on the field. Mayfield is playing like a professional among amateurs, and he is playing so well that we have to wonder if Lincoln Riley should follow him to the NFL. Let us assume that Mayfield grades well before the draft. What would stop the Jets from firing Todd Bowles, hiring Lincoln Riley, and drafting Baker Mayfield?

That is not a bad plan if you think about it, and it could be a lot better than some of the other options that the Jets have. These two guys together make an unstoppable team, and it would be nice to see it continue. If only someone in the NFL had the guts to pull off something like that. It would make for very interesting football on Sundays.
