A lot of people consider the Thor franchise to be one of the strongest links in the MCU, but apart from Loki’s dynamic role in the scheme of things, I just never saw it. Then Marvel decided to let Taika Waititi take control of “Thor: Ragnarok,” and I was instantly hooked. Putting the Russo Brothers at the helm of the two best Captain America films paid off big time, and I had a feeling this under-rated director from New Zealand was about to do the same for the Thor franchise. Two trailers later, there is no doubt that the upcoming film will be the most exciting Thor film in history.
Surprises Galore
The latest trailer was revealed during prime-time at the San Diego Comic-Con last night, and it was packed to the brim with exciting new reveals about the film (you can check out the new trailer below). It opens with Thor revealing to the Hulk the reason behind his sudden appearance in Asgard, and it had a lot to do with Kate Blanchett’s Hela – the Asgardian goddess of death.
She is adamant on unleashing Ragnarok on the many realms, and it is up to Thor and his allies to stop the powerful entity. Unfortunately for the God of Lightning, his hammer has been crushed to pieces, forcing him to look within himself in order to tackle his tremendous challenges.
The allies of the mighty god are fascinating, including the likes of the Hulk, Valkyrie and even his half-brother Loki.
Yes, that’s right! Loki and Thor have to team up to save their realm and watching the dynamics between Tom Hiddleston and Chris Hemsworth will be fascinating.
A worthy adversary
A lot has been written about the brilliant choice to cast Kate Blanchett as Hela and finally give a female antagonist a chance to shine in the MCU. Choices like these turn a good film into a great one, and by the looks of the trailer, “Thor: Ragnarok” is bustling to the brim with great choices.
We see the many new characters who will be introduced during this film, and these introductions mostly involve Hulk trying to “smash” them, including the Fenris Wolf and Surtur – an ancient and powerful creature from the Marvel mythos. Speaking of the Hulk, the Hulk speaks during this trailer, and we get to witness the big guy have a conversation with Thor.
The conversation itself is extremely revealing as well, as we now know that the Hulk is a lot smarter than he used to be a couple of films ago and that he understands his own being pretty well.
Last, but not the least, something needs to be said about the visual flair in this film. The action set pieces, and the surrounding CGI looks stunning, perhaps even more neon-y and space-agency that James Gunn’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” (and that is saying something!). Blended with an incredible soundtrack, the trailer gives us 101 reasons and more to be excited about “Thor: Ragnarok.”
