President Trump finally broke his silence, on Wednesday, about the recent chemical attack in Syria. Using social media, trump took to Twitter taunting Russia in a tweet that read, “Russia vows to shoot down any and all missiles fired at Syria. Get ready Russia, because they will be coming, nice and new and “smart!” You shouldn’t be partners with a Gas Killing Animals who kills his people and enjoys it!”

The tweet was a surprising promise made by Trump, threatening Russia with the launching of US military missiles into Syria. Trump’s tweet caught many of America's allies off guard before an agreement was reached on how to deal with the crisis.

Trump previously vowed that attacking Syria was something he would never do with his presidency. In 2013, President Obama was forced to deal with a similar crisis when Syria used chemical weapons. Trump tweeted that the US should “stay the hell out of Syria.” He also argued how the United States should not “broadcast” to the media when the military will attack. Trump blamed President Obama for being careless, stating that when it comes to war, the element of surprise is everything.

Trump vowed he would not make the same “mistakes” President Obama did, but he did just that. Though Trump may not have disclosed when the airstrike might be or where the missile could hit, he broke his vow to his supporters.

Trump remains in contact with the French president, Emmanuel Macron, and the British Prime Minister, Theresa May, but officials say they have not reached a firm agreement on the attack. Theresa May agrees to seek action against the Assad regime to prevent a chemical attack near Damascus. May has described the use of chemical weapons as a “humanitarian catastrophe.”

The British Prime Minister has not made a comment on Donald Trump’s tweet.

The Syrian chemical attack

This is not the first time Syrian leaders rained down chemicals upon their people. The last time chemicals were used was during Barack Obama’s presidency in 2013. President Obama reported the attack as a “red line,” but no military action came out of it.

The attack on April 7, 2017, displayed a shocking and horrifying scene of death, as footage was leaked onto the internet.

Children and adults were foaming at the mouth and choking in the streets of Khan Sheikhoun (the location of the attack). An investigation by the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons was dispatched and a new gas was reportedly used. Sarin gas is a highly toxic chemical compound that affects the neurotransmitters. Sarin gas was the weapon used on the Syrian people.

Why does the city of Damascus have such a big role to play?

It is too early to tell the future of every country and the role they play in the upcoming events, but one thing is for certain. The fall of the city of Damascus could eventually lead to another World War. Trump has already warned the Syrian leader, along with Russia’s leader, of a missile attack on Syria. Countries have already begun to take sides.

If Damascus is attacked by any foreign power, it is a guarantee that war will break out. Countries will be divided. World War III will begin.
