In the nearly three years since Donald Trump announced his campaign for president, Melania Trump has been in the background, often staying out of the spotlight despite the numerous scandals that have plagued her husband. In a recent tweet by Fox News, the conservative network attempted to praise the first lady, but it didn't go over well with many critics.

Melania at White House

It all started on the floor of Trump Tower back in the summer of 2015 when Donald Trump threw his name into the running for president.

With his family by his side, the former host of "The Apprentice" quickly changed the game of American politics with his reckless behavior, Twitter outbursts, and controversial policy proposals. In the backdrop has been current First Lady Melania Trump, who has reportedly become fed up with the president due to the never-ending scandals, including allegations that Trump had an affair with adult film star Stormy Daniels.

Knowing this, Melania Trump has done her best to keep her distance from Donald Trump, often sticking to more positive issues in her role as first lady. As reported by Fox News on April 10, Melania hosted an event at the White House with a group of middle school students. When the students were asked to write down what they were feeling on a board in the Blue Room, a young child accidentally spilled over a glass of water.

Melania comforted the student, saying "No problem. Don't worry, it's just water, okay?" While the story wouldn't normally be considered news worthy, Fox News made sure to quickly make an edited video package of the incident in an apparent attempt to paint the first lady in a positive light.

Twitter reacts

After Fox News tweeted about Melania Trump and the child who spilled water, critics of the administration took time to point out the hypocrisy.

"Remember when Fox News attacked Michelle Obama for wanting kids to eat healthy food? Now Melania is Superwoman for helping a kid with spilled water," one tweet read.

"Has she comforted Stormy Daniels yet, for seeing Trump's d*ck?" a Twitter user wrote.

"Don't cry over spilt water especially when POTUS is arrested then ya get deported or flee in exile back to eastern commie fascist loving Europe," a tweet stated. "Comforts ? Big deal. Did she do something differently then anyone of us would. No. Saying don’t worry it’s only water is no big deal," another tweet added.

"I just watched FOX news for an hour...not one word about FBI raids Cohen. It takes a lot of work to stay that stupid," a social media user wrote. "BREAKING: In a rare moment, a member of the Trump family shows basic human empathy," a follow-up tweet read with sarcasm.
